How often do casinos redesign their chips?

How often do casinos change the design of their chips?

I sometimes see chips that are still in circulation for sale on this site. Many times the seller suggests that if you get sick of playing the chips, you can cash them in at the casino. Suppose the casino changes the design of their chips before you cash them in - will the casino still cash the old chips?

each casino is different, to each of your questions. You'll get a guess here at best.

I believe that in Atlantic city the chips can always be redeemed at face value I don't know about other places.

Las Vegas is the same....as long as the casino exists then the chips are good. But every once in a while a Casino closes and you can't cash them. If you're talking about $1 chips it shouldn't matter cause you'll almost always be able to sell them for $1 (or close to it)

Re: How often do casinos redesign their chips?

I know someone who has two $100 chips from Grand Casino in Boloxi (pre-Kagtrina). They can't be cashed out - for obvious reasons.

The casino, at their discretion, may change the design of their chips and not obsolete the old one. If they do obsolete the old chip, they will have to give notice and have a period of time defined to cash them in. Casinos in general do not like to obsolete chips because uncashed chips=profit. When a chip becomes obsolete, that profit is taxed as income. I don't think you will ever see a $1 chip at an open casino get obsoleted, its just not worth the hassle. Now if its discovered that a few racks of $500 chips disappeared (this happened in a local casino) there will be a notice, waiting period, and then the stolen chip will be obsoleted and replaced with a new design.

Also see Gaming Ore's desctiption of a "redemption notice" in Nevada.
