Is there a website or a general way to tell from the various websites (ChipGuide, etc.) which chips are currently in use at a specific casino?
For example, on ChipGuide Foxwoods is shown to have 3 types of $1 chips. Would they all be in use or are some obsolete? Some sites list the chips as new 2000 or new 2001.

It sure would be nice if it were that easy! Unfortunately, such matters are not tracked in collectors circles. Often times there is a mention on TheChipBoard when there is a discontinuance, but that is mostly for Las Vegas and then Nevada and then New Jersey. It is seldom mentioned for other gaming jurisdictions. About the only way to know is to post a question on TheChipBoard.

You can usually discern a little of that based on the number. In Greg's case he assigns the number based on the next number in the sequence, so the higher the number typically the newer the chip. But this is because he's got a very good handle on what is out there now. There are some new finds, but in the case of riverboats and indian casinos, not nearly as many.

However, just post a picture and say "hey, which is the newest" and one of us will be along.

To add on to what Ross and Jim have said, I find that on both chipguide.com and Archie Black's Atlantic City site, the last chip in a denom (from top to bottom) is most often the current chip. This doesn't always hold true (especially for the multiple $5 variants that include LE chips), but it's a good guideline to use. Like they said though, asking is a good way to know for sure.
