Hurricane Katrina chips (Large pics)

Apologies in advance for the large scans/pics.

After reading the below thread on the Gulfport Grand chips (awesome set btw) I thought I would share my story. I am part of a First Responder Team when a natural disaster hits anywhere in our region. So when Hurricane Katrina paid the MS Gulf Coast a visit, out team was activated.

I will spare you the nasty details, as we have all seen the pictures and feel for what these people have gone thru.

Part of our duties was patrolling the Highway 90 area (Casino Row) and we became friendly with the casino salvage crews who where there to recover what they could. One of these Casino's was the President. For those familiar, the President's barge had recently been sold before the storm, and was about to be relocated to another location and renamed the Silver Slipper. Hurricane Katrina had other plans, so when the President landed on top of a Hotel across the street, they were there to basically scrap the barge.

As a chip collector, people throwing away "damaged" chips are good people to get to know. For those interested, here are some scans and a picture of the damage President Casino:

After a little bit of TLC, they cleaned up pretty nice.

Here is what a full set looks like. Missing from this pic is the $1000 chip which is an oversized Orange chip.

Couple of the highlights of the trip was getting a look inside these damaged and destroyed Casino's. Here are a couple pictures of the inside of the Beau Rivage.

I think each of us felt it, just like we did after 9-11. We all wanted to be there to help. It was an honor to visit these people first hand to lend assistance. I am also very appreciative for the chips they allowed me to add to my collection.

Hiya Ross!

Missed all you guys as well. Hopefully next year will be more schedule accomidating.

The President has/had two different molds in play. I cleaned one and put a dirty one next to it, then put it on my black Daytimer to take the picture. My apologies to imply that those where the same chip, as obvousily they are not.

Here are some more pics.

Re: Hurricane Katrina chips (Large pics)

Hey Ed,

Welcome to ChipTalk.... (although I know you've been here before).

ATTN: ChipTalkers... Ed here is also a member of the CC&GTCC, and in his off-time during his deployment, he looked in on several CC&GTCC members that were part of the hardship there. Ed has additional photos of his rescue attempts to salvage the immersed chip collection of one such Club member, who had just relocated to the area to open the Hard Rock (which was too damaged to open).

Ed also, with the permission of the salvage teams, acquired some chips that were lose in the surf and made them available to CC&GTCC members. I bought one set and displayed it here on ChipTalk some months ago, advising that they were from a legitimate source.

I use the term legitimate, because in the aftermath of the storm, many opportunists hit the casino properties gathering up surf damaged chips and other gaming equipment and souvenirs, in violation of anti- laws.

Much of that looted property ended up on eBay in the days and weeks immediately following the catastrophe. But while the bad people of the World were there, we also had some good people present.

Thanks Ed for your civic service and for what you did for CC&GTCC members in that time of need!

Jim (Gaming Ore) Follis
