Chips: 29,466 | | | Are these really antique chips? I picked these up in an antique store.
They're about 38mm diameter, 4.8 grams.
They were not cheap (maybe $2 or $2.50 each). They were advertised as clay, but they look and feel like injection-molded plastic to me.

Chips: 947 | | | Re: Are these really antique chips? Do they have a dimple? this would be an indication of injection molding. I see these chips on ebay all the time but have never bought any. Check the attached pic. You can see an example of the dimple I am talking about. It is located within the tophat at the top of the chip. I t is a little difficult to see in the pic.
Oh yeah the "dimple" could be located around the edge of the chip also. |

I don't know about plastic vs "Clay" but they seem to be injection molded. I am not an expert on the issue but I don't think clay can be injection molded. Maybe someone knows. |

Chips: 29,466 | | | Re: Are these really antique chips? The presence of parting line and gate mark is why I think they're injection molded plastic. I'm pretty sure about that. (And true "clay" has to be compression molded.)
I guess my question is: Does anybody know the history or value of these chips?

I don't know how to reconcile their "clay composition" description with what surely looks like injection molded plastic to me, though.

Chips: 10,807 | | | Re: Are these really antique chips? Yes, they fit the common description allowed for poker chips as "antique". Yes, they are clay composition. However, the amount of clay and the make-up of the "composition" material is different than PaulSon, modern-day chips.
The link provided to Robert Eisenstadt's most excellent web-site (I would give him 'rep' but he has not come here yet), if followed, shows a page of "clay-composition" antique poker chips. Even one with serated, interlocking surfaces, just like the el cheapo plastic chips from Hoyle.
But they are all clay composition chips.

| I hate to think it, but it could be a copy of an antique chip... Lots of bogus vintage baseball cards are printed on a regular basis...

Chips: 10,807 | | | Re: Are these really antique chips? The chip collecting community is not aware of any attempts to counterfeit this type of antique poker chip. Generally speaking, they are too common and too plentiful to be a viable commodity to counterfeit.
