So how many people have been following the Hooters LE Calandar Girl chips?
The $5 chips are going off in the ballpark of $40 or so for a chip that was produced in a 1000 unit run! This is just insane, there are some serious hard up people out there going crazy for a pretty girl on a chip. I don't know if it is the "delightfully tacky" crowd or what, but does anyone think that these chips will hold their prices? They have so far...... but IMO the chips themselves are ugly. They have flesh, brown and lt. blue edgespots on a standard red $5 chip. On the other hand I guess that is not what people are looking at is it?
It makes me laugh really because just recently, as in the past few days the Hooters casino thought they would produce a smaller run of $10 & $25 calandar girl chips based on the popularity of the $5's. The $25 was "limited" to a 500 chip run. No idea on the $10. Locals and dealers are snatching (for lack of a better term) these up and then offering them at the "Bargain prices". I haven't seen the $10 chips but I saw one "special" offer stated they would sell 3 $25 chips for $150.00! It made me laugh, as if this guy were doing the chip collecting world a favor by offering a quarter chip for $50. A standard starting price for a $25 LE is in the $31.00 range shipped.
Now don't get me wrong, I wish I had the $5 chips because I would gladly sell it to Bubba with his wing sauce stained Hooters shirt and beer belly hanging out the bottom for $40 bucks (not that there is anything wrong with a beer belly... I am constantly working on mine), but this is getting out of hand to the point where I think it is just comical. Does anyone else get it that can enlighten me as to why these chips are "worth" so much (other than that is what someone is willing to pay)?
Econ 101, supply and demand. These are in short supply and like you said, there's a group out there that likes pretty girls on a chip and puts these in high demand. The beauty of a free market is the price will eventually find an equilibrium. Now, whether that's above or below $40, unfortunately, remains to be seen.
But the price to play just went up. April's chip is now a $25 (although I've been told from a reliable source that there will also be a $10). There are also multiple chips for April.
