Amazing find

I have recently been hooked on collecting illegals from my home state of Kentucky. As most of you already know there were some famous casinos around these parts. I was talking to an older gentleman about poker and my affinity for the game and collecting chips. He stated that there is a 75 year old man named Lou Coletti who actually went to all these casinos and saved all their chips over the years. His collection is absolutely amazing. Some of the chips are in mint condition. I was able to locate this man and can't begin to tell you about some of his stories. I could sit and listen all day long. Anyway, he has boxes full of these illegals and is selling them for next to nothing. He has chips from 90% of the casinos that used to exist here in KY. I set up a meeting with him for this Saturday and he advised that he will let me pick and choose whatever I want from the boxes!! I feel like a little boy on Christmas Day....Had to share this unique find. Will make sure to post some pics of what I find!!!

Sounds great Aces. Keep me in mind when making your purchase. I may "need" to buy some.

I am no expert on illegals, but when ever I see them on e-bay it seems that they rarely command the high prices that chips from some of the older casino's do. Do some homework, I'm sure there are some gems in there.

Very cool though. Make sure and post some pics.

Re: Amazing find

Will do Jim...I will pick up a LOAD of these. Can't wait to post pics so Jim "Gaming Ore" can tell us more about them!!! His chip knowledge is stunning.

I will do a little homework prior to meeting with him so I at least have a clue about what is what.

Re: Amazing find

Hey Aces,

I assume that have already downloaded a copy of the illegalguidev4.pdf file? And that you're checking things out at tyrusrex.com?

Anyway, I would definitely be interested in going in with you on any buys that you arrange for chips that can be substantiated and verified. That is, assuming that you don't want them all!

Actually I have not Jamby and I really appreciate this info. I will definately check it out prior to meeting with Lou.

I hope we are discussing this in the right place...but I would gladly share this find with anyone...We are here to share. He is about an hour away from me and said that he puts one of the boxes in an antique mall. The mall then sells the items for him and takes a cut of the profit. He said he would meet me outside and allow me to go through his other boxes and get what I wanted(this way the antique mall does not get part of his profit) I am fairly confident that all his chips are verifiable and worth adding to any collection. It is not about the resale value to me..it's the history behind them and a small piece of poker history.

He stated that some of the chips are mint and of course some show wear and tear. Personally, I like both. I like being able to see the mold and old hotstamps but at the same time like seeing years of play on the chip...gives it character. Anyway, I don't want this to sound like I hit some kind of illegal chip goldmine, but I think there should be some great finds(not to mention hearing more of his stories behind each chip)

One last thing, he also stated that he has some chip trays, dice and other items from some of these casinos. I will check this stuff out and see if there is anything worth having.

Re: Amazing find

If you're looking for partners, I'll put up 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 or whatever, up front, sight unseen. Let me know
