Monte Carlo chips from Monaco

I collected some chips while I was in the USN, one place we stopped was Monaco in the early 80's. I have several of these chips, in francs, and i have a couple of questions for all you guru's out there.
Are any european casino's still using franc chips, or have they all switched to the euro?
If this is an obsolete chip because of the change to euro, does it have any higher collector value? hmm, asking the wrong question, does it make any difference that the casino is still active and doing well?
I didn't realize there were other chip collectors out there (duh) til i found this site by buying bounty chips from one of your site supporters and they sent me a chiptalk chip with my order. I think that was about a month ago, and now I already have plans for a 1000 to 1500 set of ceramic chipcos circulating in my brain, i've already ordered some octagons from Erik, (looking for an egytian plaque or 2), have already ordered 2 sets of copags, 1 dal negro, 4 sample sets, 40 show em chips, I'm having Lowell make my custom buttons and poker genie holder, along with that he is trying to make a custom $5K plaque in black acrylic for me, (we'll see how that goes and if it turns out, i will post), ive conversed with J5 about designing my chips, ........

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I think there should be some kind of warning page before you can get to this site, something like "This website is very addicting and will cost you more $$ than you ever thought possible" I think that would be very helpful for people like myself......lol, (course I wouldn't listen anyway!)

ok, I'm trying to post pictures of the monte carlo picture, and have uploaded to this site by using the "manage attachments" button, but I see by preview that I haven't actually got them attached. What am I missing?

PS, thanks krw17 for steering me in the right direction

Have you checked out this article?

Should help you overcome any problems with posting a picture. Welcome to the board. We look forward to seeing a picture of that chip. There are a few collectors here that should be able to help you determine the relative value. One person you might look up is Jim Follis (Chiptalk member name: Gaming Ore)

Re: Monte Carlo chips from Monaco

Yes, those are some nice Bud Jones chips from the "American" casino. I have a few also. I also have some pearly jetons in francs from the Big House - the main casino you have to dress up for, the one from the James Bond movies. Don't have any pics here, but I'll try to post some later.

Welcome to the addicting geeky nut house. Most of us are chip monks in this virtual monastery. We're glad to have some more company!

Some answers....

Sandy,

Most european countries have gone to the euro, which now makes the fr. chips (jetons and plaques) obsolete.

Generally speaking, chips from a closed casino can certainly represent a greater value than those from an open casino, HOWEVER!!!! It is not unusual for all the chips of a casino that is closing to suddenly come onto the market. When this happens, then the "generally speaking" is not valid.

European chips (here in America) are not as in-demand as other gaming jurisdictions.

I've looked to the on-line price guide (eBay) for your pictured chip and note the following...

One is on eBay now, ending in four days and is at $3.00. One closed last week for $7.11 plus $2.50 postage. Here is the link to the current auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/CASINO-de-MONTE-...QQcmdZViewItem

Keep an eye on it for value of your chip.

Best reagrds,

Jim (Gaming Ore) Follis

That's not correct. Only 12 of 25 EU countries have it. A few European countries outside the EU also use it as an official currency, e.g. Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican City. Andorra, Kosovo and Montenegro use it as a de facto currency, while most European countries outside the EU haven't got it. So, both inside and outside EU, most European countries haven't got the euro.
