MGM Chip, how collectible...

Hi all,

I am looking to start collecting some theme in my chips.. Can't collect everything and have a limited budget.

I like the mgm designs and might attempt to put a small mgm collection together.

Below is a current auction for a MGM $1..

Question:
How collectible are the MGM chips and what price range is reasonable for them.

Re: MGM Chip, how collectible...

The MGM chips are a nice simple design with a lot of appeal. There's also a lot of them out there from the various MGM/Mirage properties throughout the country. If you're on a limited budget, I wouldn't go squandering it on eBay purchases. You might want to start with current issue chips (the MGM Grand Vegas $1 chip is very nice), and the good thing about those is that they are available for their face value.

I don't know how collectable the Bud Jones MGM Grand chip that you referenced might be, perhaps one of the very knowledgeable chip collectors on this site could chime in with regards to that. However the chip itself can be purchased, retail, for about $7 (that would be from a retail vendor who would be selling the chip at a nice profit.) So it's actual market value is probably a bit less than that.

Re: MGM Chip, how collectible...

MGM Grand is a great casino to collect. I don't know about the value of the chips or their likelihood of appreciation, but they have a lot of variety available, and they've been good looking chips over the years.

There are chips from the old days (before the fire), then some great chips about the time of their re-opening. And now many chips from the current period, including a nice chip from their Poker Room opening in April 2005. So you have lots of choices.

My favorite chip of all time is the MGM Grand Copper Lion from their re-opening. It's a special Bud Jones chip with a mold never duplicated, and features a copper foil image of the lion on both sides. I have a bunch and buy more whenever I see them at a reasonable price. Here are two examples on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6233922053

There were also some special Grand Re-Opening chips made at the same time, plus a few other commemoratives with the same mold:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6239748193
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6239701788

The $1 chip you reference is from the same period (1993-95). I have a few of those and they are nice Bud Jones chips. The edges aren't as fancy as the $5, but the copper foil lion is beautiful.

Here are some very collectible chips from the old days:

and here are their more recent and current chips.
