My collection of El Cortez and "sun" themed chips

As the title says, I collect chips from The El Cortez and chips with a "sun" theme to them. Here are some pics.

Nice collection. Themes are so much fun!

I was going to say I have a Casino del Sol / Casino of the Sun Chipco that I could send you, but I see you already have one.

Thanks. The Casino del Sol Chipco was one of the first that I got. Courtesy of Gaming Ore. They have a sweet yellow $2 that I've been looking for.

Leave it to G.O.! He spends some time around here (he works here actually). The yellow $2 is their drop chip (I play there periodically). I haven't tried to buy one off of a dealer or from the cage, but I was playing many months back and someone re-bought from the dealer and all the dealer had available at the time was the $2s for the rake. Rather than holding up the game, he just gave him a stack of $2s. I wound up winning a hand that had one of them in the pot. I probably should have held onto it.

I'll see what I can do next time I'm there. They will be pretty grubby and could almost definitely stand for a good cleaning.

An additional note... there is one on ebay right now, but the seller is calling is obsolete (ha ha ha!) and has the starting bid at $4.99 if I recall.

Re: My collection of El Cortez and "sun" themed chips

I saw the one on ebay. The guy wanted like $4.99 plus $4 for s/h!

That'd be great if you could pick one up next time you're there. I'd also be interested if they have a snapper or any other fractional. Thanks!

Re: My collection of El Cortez and "sun" themed chips

I seriously doubt they have any fractionals. The cheapest game in the poker room is 2/4 and the table games (blackjack) start at a $5 bet. The BJ tables don't use the Chipcos. I'd bet they are Paulson. There are $1s for tips, or maybe it's for the BJ payouts (two $1s and two quarters???... not sure, I don't play blackjack).

I'll see what I'm able to come up with.

I think they are BJs. I have a $1 BJ next to the Chipco in the pic above.

Greetings and Happy New Year!

Trutan, the BJ chip in your scan is an obsolete chip. It was used at the Tribe's original facility (The Casino of the Sun) before the second facility was built (Casino del Sol), which is why it only has the Casino of the Sun name.

The poker room started out at the "Sun" facility and was moved to the "Sol" facility when it was built a few years back. In the old room there was a 25 cent and fifty cent chip, but when the BJ chips were replaced with the Chipcos, all of the BJ's were put on sale (from the cage) at face value. The few fractionals were bought by employees almost immediately. They are BJ's in the 8SUITS mold (2 repetitions of 4 suits).

For several years these chips were available from the cage, but always at face value. The best deal was the set of 5 NCV (BJ's 8SUITS) that were used for poker tournaments that were sold for $5 a set. At the present time none of these chips are available and you cannot redeem any of them. However, I have seen the BJ NCVs mixed in with the current Chipco NCVs for poker tournaments.

The $2 Chipco did not start off as a "drop" chip. It was used in the 1/2 and 2/4 games and the last time I was there (some months ago) I was under the impression that they were available for open purchase at the poker room desk. Although these are all very worn, there are two versions, with and without a black line around the inlay design (at the edge of the chip).

The snapper is a Paul-Son chip, used for blackjack and it is RFID tagged.

Jim (Gaming Ore) Follis

Current Paul-Son, RFID tagged chips.

Current, Chipco NCVs for poker tournaments, which are augmented with older BJ NCVs.

Re: My collection of El Cortez and "sun" themed chips

Thanks for the knowledge and the scans Jim! For the most part, I've been a casual collector. I don't know much about what chips are out there or their history but I always enjoy hearing the stories. I've just been picking them up when I come accross one that I don't have. (or that I can afford as is the problem with many of the obs. El Cortez chips )

Thanks again for sharing!
