Chips: 1,698 | | | A.D.'s California Club Collection Jim,
Thanks for the great feedback! It's nice to have a second set of eyes look at what I've put together. I stumbled across the Taylor & Co. records somewhat by accident last week on a cloudy night on the mountain at about 5 in the morning. I was so excited about what I found that my mind was racing for a couple hours, which made getting to sleep a little tough. Especially the thought of the orange and green $5 chip!!!
I hadn't thought about the lettering and the denomination on the hot stamp being two separate dies. Makes a lot of sense though. I overlaid the three that are clear in Photoshop and indeed the outer stamp is exactly the same (within the precision of the stamping itself). I keep learning more and more about how this all worked.
It would be great to be able to look at other manufacturer records to see where all these different "issues" fall in line, but as old as the California Club was, I suspect that would be extremely difficult.
I'll keep doing what I can. I will say, it's an awful lot of fun to focus on just one casino for collecting (and in this case, it looks like a more obscure one). The fun really is in the associated research that goes with it even though it isn't really necessary.
Thanks again for the comments!
Gil (A.D.)

Chips: 1,698 | | | Re: A.D.'s California Club Collection - 10/27 Update! No new CCs this post (I know... keep your disappointment at bay ). I did want to post a short note to mention that I have an inquiry into Jim B. at ASM for any history information he may have as far as California Club chips at Burt Co.. The response I got back was that he would likely post information here on Chiptalk. I know he's swamped right now with a number of different things (43mm related in that list), so I mentioned that he can take his time.
At any rate, if he chooses to post it here, great. If not (or if I get it via email), I'll be sure to distill the contents in relation to the other recent findings.
A huge thanks in advance to Jim for taking the time out of what is undoubtedly a very busy schedule to dig up some history! +1 for sure. |

Chips: 1,698 | | | Re: A.D.'s California Club Collection After a long wait, here's the newest volley!
A 2nd ed. "Card Room" $1 chip. This beauty might as well be brand new. The chip itself is flawless and the hot stamp has enough stray foil bits around the stamp itself to tell it has seen very little, if any, table play.
A 5th ed. faro chip on the small key mold. The stamp is a little dingy, but is very clear and clean. The chip itself is also in fantastic shape. I expected this one to be a challenge to pick up, but it was pretty easy and went for a whole lot less than I expected (and a whole lot less than TCR or C&W values).
O.P. has been updated with these two.
Enjoy! |

Chips: 1,698 | | | Re: A.D.'s California Club Collection I've needed to post this for a couple days now. Too busy agonizing over the inlay for my new customs I guess.
Another in the many different edge spot colored 7th ed. $5. This one is in orange. Side by side with the salmon, it's actually easy to mistake the two at first glance. It makes me wonder which of the two got used more considering the array of different $5s was presumably for security reasons (they were apparently swapped out pretty regularly). To me, having two that close would be a security risk.
No matter, if my memory is right, this now leaves two remaining to fill out the set of 7th ed. $5.
O.P. updated with this one. You can see the similarity between this and the salmon spot fairly clearly there. It's a lot closer in reality.
Enjoy! |

Chips: 1,698 | | | Re: A.D.'s California Club Collection - 10/27 Update! INCOMING!!!
Two new ones (actually, I've had them for a couple weeks, but have been unable to scan them till yesterday).
The crazy cool one:
This one comes care of the one and only James Campiglia. He reports that he is only aware of two of these, and a possible third. We both agree that it should be grouped in with the other diamond molds, in my case the 2nd edition (his 3rd). It is obviously well worn, and so far the only canceled chip in my collection.
The question that James asked (somewhat rhetorically) that is actually a really good one is why in the world did the California Club need so many quarters?? Here is one that is separate from the "other" quarter in the issue (other being specifically for the "Card Room"). The blank chip in the 3rd that was overstamped with 25-cents (while there was already a 25-cent chip in the release). The one suggestion, that actually makes sense, is that they were used for craps. It might go to explain the large amount of wear found on the 25-cent chips from the California Club.
Finally:
Relatively common and all that I have seen are in well worn condition. This one looked pretty good and in the grand scheme of things, unless something spectacular comes along, it will do the job of filling the hole in the collection.
It looks like the supply of CCs that I need are running thin. Part of it may be that I have a pretty good chunk of the releases, but then I look at C&W or TCR and realize that there are many more to be gathered, and a number of them aren't all that rare or bank busters. I keep looking.
Enjoy! |

Chips: 1,698 | | | Re: A.D.'s California Club Collection - 10/27 Update! Two more chips to the collection (technically three...).
The last two of the green, 7th ed. $5 chips needed to round out that part of the collection. I feared it would take a long time to get those filled out, but the pieces fell into place to get it finished.
The "shared" 7th ed. $5 chip. I've had one for a while, but it was in mediocre shape. I picked this one up, for all intents and purposes brand new, in a great transaction (along with the two above) with James Campiglia.
While emailing back and forth about California Club chips, James was kind enough to share several scans and photos of other California Club chips that have passed his way one time or another. Most of them I had never seen photos of, but had only read of their existence in the price guides. He said he hoped I could use them here. I need to figure out how to put them in here and still distinguish those that are mine and those that aren't.... That's a project for a future day.
In the meantime, enjoy the new scans!
