Carnival Cruise Ship Chips

I just posted a VERY long trip report about my Carnival cruise in General Topics, but I thought I should post the chip pictures here. (Report: http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/genera...se-report.html)

I was on the Carnival Legend. It looks like the whole fleet used to use the generic Paulson chips, but the $5 chips are being replaced by chips specific to each ship. I found a couple of $5 Paulsons from other ships, but perhaps because the Legend is newer, their chips were not Paulsons. The were some kind of plastic with no real mold. Maybe Jim or someone else knows what they are. There was also a set of anniversary chips that had no specific ships on them.

Whenever I saw a new chip, I would keep it or trade for it. I took pictures of all the different chips I had, but only kept a few -- one $1, two of the $2.50s, and four of the $5s. I would have liked to keep more, but at $5 a chip for the interesting ones, I thought I'd better limit myself!

Here are the generic Paulson chips:

(I kept the $1, $5 and 2 $2.50s)

(Sorry for the blur, but the camera was new, so I was just learning!)

These are the Legend specific chips -- the Casino on board was Club Merlin!! These are the plasticy ones -- I have no idea who makes them:

(I kept the sword in stone chip.)

These are the plasticy Carnival anniversary chips:

Here are some pretty Paulsons from other ships:

(I kept one of these: the pagoda on the right.)

(I kept this one, of course!)

I love the hierogylphics around the edge of this chip: pretty cool!

So, there are the chips I saw on the ship. If anyone can tell me what those plastic chips are, I would appreciate it!!

Welcome home bolgenmod. Sounds like the trip was a great success and thanks for sharing the chip pics.

Didn't I hear that you were an English Professor? Plasticy?

I am an English professor, but sometimes the brain doesn't work too well! I just finished the longest trip report ever, and I couldn't think of a better word. Oh well...

I rather like it. Plasticy. It's certainly descriptive. I think that Professor Boondocker would surely approve.

Re: Carnival Cruise Ship Chips

More later, but definitely Bud Jones plastic chips.

Glad you had a good cruise. I like the Legend. You also showed chips from the Spirit and Miracle (I think). I will confirm when 8 get back to my computer, instead of this hand-held.

Thanks Jim: I don't know much about chips beyond the few that I have. What makes you sure they are Bud Jones -- please teach me how you could tell!

And actually the other (non-Legend) chips are from the Victory (South China Sea Club), the Spirit (Louis the XIV), and the Glory (Camel Club Casino -- the Egyptian themed chip). As I said, I eagerly grabbed all the non-Legend chips I saw: lots from the Victory and Spirit, but only saw one from the Glory. And of course, I kept/photographed all the variations I saw.

Now that I am back, of course I regret that I didn't keep one of every variation (of the reds, of course), but that would have meant another nine chips or so. And I guess I am not a true collector because at the time it didn't seem worth the extra $45. But perhaps I am on the road to becoming a true collector, because now I think that would have been $45 well spent. Next time!

Re: Carnival Cruise Ship Chips

Here are some additional Carnival chips...

Where the chips appear to be the same, be sure to look closely at the ships! The ones with the pointy bow is called the newer ship. The center $25 looks to be a white inlay, but it is peach, while the one on the right is light orange. Same with the two $1's to the left of the 20 cent chip. The 20 cent chip was short lived for craps. There is also a 50 cent out there and I need one!

If you look closely at the H&C molds of the two identical $5 chips, you can see one is the long cane version, while the other is the regular version. (Try to see the distance between the hat brim and cane, where they come closest.)

In the early days of Carnival, they used the generic looking design, except the color of the sky denoted from which ship the chips were used on. Before these chips, there was another style that was used. (Nope, I don't have any of those either.) Red was the first color used.

For awhile, Carnival used the orange or peach sky on all their ships, but then started issuing ship specific chips in the $5 denomination. Then they did a few ship identified $1's and $2.50's.

The 20th Anniversary (Chipco, linen finish) has an expiration date; "valid thru 1992". The MS Sensation (Chipco, satin finish) also has an expiration date, as does the Millenium chip (Chipco, satin finish). This same artwork was used on a Millenium chip for Holland America (also owned by Carnival) in a grey tone, looking very ghost-like.

The $5 non negotiable chip is a promotional giveaway, match play chip. The Unicorn mold chip (Chipco) is hot-stamped "$25" on the reverse and I have yet to find out what it was sued for. However, The logo (the ship and spade) belongs to Ocean Player's Club, which is owned by Carnival and operates all the Carnival casinos (The Fun Ships, Costa, Princess, Holland America, Cunard and a couple others).

The Tournament chip is one of 3 denominations of Tournament chips used for the Blackjack Tournaments. I do not have the $500 and $1000.

Here are ship specific chips, mostly already shown, but a few more odds and ends.

Three disfferent $5's per ship. Common reverse is shown at right.

And these...

Top row is a special three chip set to commemorate Inaugural Cruises around the Mediterranean before being positioned here in America. Also shows a $5 and $2.50 from the rack.

I do not have other denominations from the Conquest, Miracle and Liberty.

Re: Carnival Cruise Ship Chips

Thanks (as always) Jim for the great information and the great chip pictures! I am glad to see that when it comes to the individual ship's 5s, I actually had pictures of many of them -- probably the closest I'll ever come to matching Jim's awesome collections!

I appreciate the comments, but when it comes to "Wet Chips" (chips from cruise lines and off-shore or trip-to-nowhere cruises) I am very short stacked!

BTW-All issues of all Wet Chips are valued at about 5% - 10% more than their land-based counterparts. It's because of the premium involved to acquire them.
