The best way to divide 1000 chips into different denom's ??

Allow me to quote myself. I hijacked (sorry) another thread thinking that you guys would prefer not to see another thread about splitting a certain amount of chips into different denominations.

If anyone would like to help me out with this I'd really appreciate it! Basically all of my Poker experience comes from online play so I'm afraid I will mess up when putting my set together.

I have no clue whether I should buy 600/200/200 of each, 600/300/100 or 700/200/100 or what! I figure all I need, at most, is three different denominations. I think the $100, $500 and $1000 chips would be sweet to play with although the actual amount of money I’ll be playing for will be a mere fraction of those sums.

Isobel
Basically, my question is: What is the best way to divide a 1000 chip set into different denominations?

The chips will be used in no-limit hold’em ring games with up to 10 players, about half as many most of the time I reckon. I read somewhere that 100 chips per player is recommended and it sounds fair to me but I’m sure 50 would do as well? It is always nice to throw more than one or two chips in the pot when you bet I guess. The amount of $$$ is less important since it’s very unlikely we’ll be playing with the amounts stated on the chips anyway.

There will be very little tournament or freeze-out action going on since, at least for starters, I will play with my friends only. So although the poker itself will be taken quite seriously the games are supposed to be social events. I would hate to see a player leave the table early, unable to join back in on the fun. Therefore, I suppose, I need to allow re-buys. I’m guessing a good way of solving things would be to allow a re-buy once every hour?

My idea is to buy the $100, $500 and $1000 Paulson Pharaoh’s. I realize the $1000 chip is of little use considering the fact it is only twice the $’s of the mid-value chip but over here our coin values are 1, 5 and 10 and I believe it would feel very natural for people to play with the above denominations. Easy to count, easy to translate into the amounts we’re likely to be playing with (perhaps 1/100 or 1/10 of the stated value, only in SEK instead of USD). I don’t think it would have to be one of those two amounts though. Any amount of money could mean a certain amount of chips!

I’m not sure if I need to limit the number of re-buys allowed but I find it unlikely that the same player would get broke over and over within a matter of hours. With 1000 chips there should be room for re-buys at least if every player starts out with 50 chips. Besides, we’ll probably be about 5-6 players most of the time, not 10.

But let’s say I wouldn’t want to be limited to this type of game since I’m buying a relatively large and expensive set of chips. Let’s say I would want to have a tournament or freeze-out every now and then. I guess that wouldn’t be unlikely. Is there a way to make my set more versatile and still have enough chips for each player plus re-buys? Re-buys would not be allowed in tournaments and freeze-outs of course. I mean how would it look in a heads up situation where each player has 500 chips each? They would have to move huge stacks of chips into the pot with every bet. That certainly wouldn’t work too well. The ability to color-up would be nice but I guess that would require non-denom chips? Unfortunately I can’t buy the non-denom Pharaoh’s at holdempokerchips.com since they do not ship to Europe so I’m stuck with the denom ones unless I can have a friend ship them here for me.

Hope to get some help from people with a lot of experience with these types of things. As I said 99,9% of my poker experience (an understatement) comes from online play so I’m pretty much clue less. Thanks in advance!

Well one thing to consider is the value of the chips and the ratio between them. E.g., black is worth 4 greens, purple = 5 black, etc. So you need more of the lower values than the higher ones. I like to have enough of the higher color to color up all of the preceeding color, so if I have 10 purple, I need at least 5 orange. Figure out how big you want to make your starting chipstacks (total amount and number of chips) and work upwards.

.

I'm not 100% clear on how your ring game will work regarding assigned values, but I do know that 1000 chips is way more than enough for 10 players, therefore almost any sensible combination of those three denominations will work well. That said, I think that 400 Black, 400 Purple, and 200 Orange would be great. I think with the way that you are gonna use these chips - just about any combination of having more of the smaller denominations a less of the bigger ones will be fine. 400, 400, 200 is the combination that stands out to me.... agreeing with JM's logic. Maybe someone else will have a better option.... or maybe even agree with me.

how about getting the nondenoms? 1000 is plenty like trips said and 400 400 200 sounds good

I would probably get more of the lowest denom. Maybe like 500 300 200. 1000 is definitely comfortable for 10 players though.

1000 chips are plenty for 10 players. At the moment, i only have a 300 chip set and it works for 10 player with no problem altho I wouldn't mind having a 500 set.

400, 400, 200, sounds ok but I might make it 4 colors and make it 400, 300, 200, 100.

I don't understand about allowing re-buys. If you are playing cash game. If it is a NL game, we would allow re buys anytime to whatever the max buyin is set at. And for a limit game we don't care how much or how often you rebuy.

1st congrats to FG for winning the longest 1st post award!
I agree with dad604, 4 colors might make more sense with a 1000 set.
Still will be plenty of chips per player (especially under 10) and allows better color up options when you might be playing a tourney. Yeah, let em buy back in, more money to win

Wow that was a seriously long post. I said to my self... "Oh my gosh this is a really really long post and I'm not half way through it yet!"

Seriously though, it was much better reading this than...

nice chips..... or

nice design....or

cool....

Now that that is out of the way ....I would go with more lower denom, as far as denom or non denom you gotta pick that one!!
