Denomination Breakdown of First Chip Set

I'm about to get my first set of chips and have contemplated what I need. I would appreciate some advice from more experienced players regarding the breakdown of my first chip set.

I've posted my NL Hold 'Em structure below, and here's what you get for the buy-in:
  • $1,000 in chips
    8 x $25
    8 x $100
For a 10-man table I should need 80 $25 and 80 $100 chips to start the tournament. I'm guessing I'll be fine with the following chip breakdown in my set:
  • 100 x $25
    100 x $100
    25 x $500
The guys I play with love rebuys, and if one rebuy and one addon's allowed I figure the folowing chip breakdown should be good (alternatively it will allow a 30-man tournament without rebuys/addons):
  • 250 x $25
    250 x $100
    50 x $500
50 x $1,000 (yeah 30 would do, but I want at least 50 per denom)
Structure
  • 1. $25-$25
    2. $25-$50
    3. $50-$100
10 Minute Break - Last Chance for Rebuys
Total Up the Prize Pool
  • 4. $75-$150
    5. $100-$200
    6. $150-$300
10 Minute Break to remove $25 Chips
  • 7. $200-$400
    8. $300-$600
5 Minute Break to remove $100 Chips
  • 9. $500-$1,000
    10. $1,000-$2,000
    11. $1,500-$3,000
5 Minute Break to remove $500 Chips (if I get $1,000 chips)
  • 12. $2,000-$4,000
    13. $3,000-$6,000
    14. $5,000-$10,000
TTFN,

Yokiboy

well 16 starting chips is way too little! and those blind structures are really steep for T1000. I know you are saying everyone loves to rebuy so the amount of money in the game is going to be more... but you stop rebuys at lvl 3, which is too early in the game if you plan on there being more money on the table.

Try the same game but increase the initial buyin to T2500. go with
20 $25 and 20 $100 for each player. Each player gets 40 chips start with. Rebuy and chip up with $500 chips. If everyone rebuys/addon's twice then you'll need $50,000, or 100 $500 chips. You can get 500 chips and be good to go.

That's solid advice Psy, 16 chips aren't much, but I sort of like keeping it to T1000. It just makes it easier on everyone to sort of translate how much is actually in the pot. You're probably right though, that people prefer having more chips.

I forgot to ask, what blind structures do you suggest? Lets say I go with your T2500, is my structure alright then?

We're all used to playing $20 ring(cash) games with .25/.50 blinds

yep... it's perfect. I play the exact same thing except i dont do the 25/25 blinds, i just jump straight to 25/50. I also allow only one rebuy anytime, not limited to the level. I did it this way so it's not forcing someone to try to go all-in before a certain level. It also doesnt pressure people to add-on.

The way i've had my last few tournaments is like this... $40 buyin, $30 into main pot, $5 into bounty hunting game(take a player out of the tournament and get $5), and $5 in the high hand(or highhand/bad beat) pot. One rebuy costs $20, and get's the same amount of chips as the intitial buyin. I played 2500 and 3000 starting chips. They are basically the same thing.

Thanks again psy, I will order a few more chips than I thought at first, and we'll try your suggested T2500 format.

TTFN,

Yokiboy

I run a weekly game with a 10,000 chip buy in comprising of the following.(You can work down from 10,000 if you want to use 1,000 - but I wouldn't recommend less than 40 chips per player (although I recently hear of one regular game starting with 16. The idea of a game it to entertain people - that way they come back. 16 chips is not that entertaining in my humble opinion.

50 x 100 chips
10 x 500 chips

for up to 10 players.

For 11 top 30 players we use

30 x 100 chips
10 x 500 chips
3 x 1000 chips

Blinds schedule is usually

100 - 200 (45 mins)
200 - 400 (45mins)
300 - 500 (45 mins)
break
500 - 1000 (30 mins)
700 - 1400 (30 mins)
800 - 1600 (30 mins)
break - and remove 100 chips 1000's with a chip race for odd 100's
1000 - 2000 (30 mins)
1500 - 3000 (30 mins)
2000 - 4000 (30 mins)
3000 - 6000 (30 mins)
4000 - 5000 (30 mins)
5000 - 6000 (30 mins)

that's 7 1/2 hours - but the game has never lasted more than 5 hours with 16 players or more than 8 hours with 30.
