friend wants 1000 custom breakdown

Hi guys,

I have a buddy that is finally going to take the ASM custom plunge. He asked me for some input, since I've gone that route and learned a thing or two. He told me he wants a cash/tourney set up . 25 cents, 50 cents, 1,3,5,10, 25, 100,500. I asked him how many people for his tourney and he said around 14. I suggested a 10 person cash setup. I believe his breakdown was
25 c / 50
50 c/ 50
1 d / 200
3 d / 100
5 d / 200
10 d / 100
25 d / 100
100 d / 100
500 d/ 100

So I took his numbers and played with them. I thought about my experiences with buying customs. You always want more after you get them !! I did not buy enough of some denominations and did add-ons. Not the biggest deal, but color matching was not always perfect using different batches of clay. I jumped in without thinking about tourney set-ups , cash set-ups, etc..., but I bought a lot, so my flexibility made up for my short sightedness . I would have made a few changes, but am really happy with my customs.

I've done a T100 tourney using my cash set and it worked quite well. So I started with that in mind. I thought about the tourney blind structure, number of people, rebuys, chip ups, etc.. Cash sets are easier to figure out. I used a T10000 blind and moved the decimal place over for a T100, making some minor adjustments. I thought you could start at 1/2 blinds, but my friend wanted 25 cent and 50 cent chips. I prefer two racks of denoms for cash games, but tried to choose what he wanted.

.25/.50
.50/ 1
1/2
2/4
3/6
4/8
5/10
7/14
10/20 chip up to 5 dollar chips
15/30
20/40
25/50
30/60
40/80
50/100
70/140
100/200

A rough blind schedule

I figured he would need something like this, dropping the 500 chip, 25 chip, and adding a 2 dollar chip and a 20 dollar chip. I figure someday he can add a big tourney set to his customs.

.25 - 80
.50 - 80
1 - 240
2 - 100 for cash games
3 - 100 for cash games
5 - 200
10 - 100
20 - 60
100 - 40

This gives him enough for a 20 person T100 tourney as follows

.25 4 chips
.50 4 chips
1 12 chips
5 9 chips
10 4 chips
33 chip starting stack, chip up to 5 dollars using last 5 dollar chip and one 10 dollar chip. Now you still have the sixty 20 dollar chips for more chip up later and you have the 40 100 dollar chips for rebuys, etc... seems to work. And you have a cash set up too, although I prefer two racks of each, we rarely use anything less than a dollar chip on cash games. Usually 1/2 no limit on cash

He still wants more 100 dollar chips, and no 2 dollar chip. I'm still working with him. This is the place for advice. I'll get him to check out this thread. Advise us with your wisdom Chiptalkers. thanks

Re: friend wants 1000 custom breakdown

I'd be blunt and suggest forgetting about the .50, 3, and 10 chips. They are not 4x or 5x the previous chip value and unless he is planning on playing a lot of limit may not be the best value.

I definitely recommend getting a nondenominational chip that can be used as any of those nonstandard values or whatever is needed.

My suggestion would be

125 x $0.25
175 x $1
150 x $5
125 x ND (nondenom chip, could act as $0.10, $20 or T2500)
125 x T25
150 x T100
150 x T500

Use the ND chip as .05 or .10 for .10/.25 games or as a $20 chip. For ten-player .25/.50 games give out 12 x 25c, 17 x $1, and as many $5 as people want for their buyin (such as 6 x $5 to make $50 buy-in).

For tourneys of 15 players, do an 8/8/8 tourney of T5000 or let the ND chip = T2500 and do 8/8/8/2 for T10000. Enough for 15 players with color up of green and black chips (if desired).

i like this breakdown, but I would not do the 20, I would just use the 25 in cash and tourney set and get either 20 x 5000 or add 20 to the .25

Re: friend wants 1000 custom breakdown

Better yet, get 20 non-denominated chips that you could use as as needed.

that would work as well, I just wouldn't get a 20 and 25 in the same set.

Re: friend wants 1000 custom breakdown

Good stuff, thanks guys . I knew you could open up my mind. I've never gotten a ND chip before, so I didn't even think about that idea. I'll get my buddy to check out this thread. I keep telling him this is the place for good info. Keep those ideas coming. thanks, frank

QFT.

I like to keep the cash and tourney sets separate, even going as far as to get different inlays on them. This just provides an added layer of security when you have both sets in play on the same night.

Re: friend wants 1000 custom breakdown

Non-denominated chips are the bomb. All three of my custom sets have them. They really do add versatility to a custom chipset.
