I'm contemplating a purchase of 1,000 Protege's that will serve as an all-purpose set for both cash games & tournaments. I would appreciate any comments on my planned breakdown.
1. Chip denoms will do double duty -- eg., the Green $25 chip will double as $25 or 25 cents (likewise with the $5 to 5 cents, the $100 to $1.00, etc.). This will save on the necessity of purchasing the $0.25 white and $1 blue chips.
2. I will most likely be playing more cash games than tournaments so I'll be weighting the chip breakdown to satisfy cash games more than tournaments.
3. I'm planning for a max of 10 players, but realistically will have 4-8 players most often. Planning for 10 players will assure plenty of chips for fewer players.
4. I have read the excellent chip breakdown articles by Matthew in the Articles Forum. I've also read the chip breakdown suggestions on Sidepot & also on Home Poker Tourney.
5. I want as many denoms as possible in order to have the beautiful variety of punched/cut inlays that make the Protege line so attractive. However, I realize that too many denoms may lessen the functionality of my set.
6. Cash games will be anywhere from $0.05-$0.10 Blinds to $0.25-$0.50 Blinds for the kids. $1-$2 or $2-$4 for adults. The most common game for both kids & adults will be either limit or no-limit Hold'em.
7. I don't play tournaments now but want to plan for them in the possible future with this purchase.
I'm undecided about the NCV chip but we occasionally play blackjack and I could use it as a $2.50 chip to pay off the 1.5-1 payout on Blackjacks with bets of $5 or $25. If I don't use it I'll probably increase the $5000 chip total to 100. Would the $5000 chip increase be necessary for tournaments or could I get by with just 50 of those high denom chips for tournaments?
Thanks for any suggestions you can make to help me decide.
I will give you my breakdown. I have 1000 Protege set up for cash and tourney. I can do .25/.50 up to around a $20/$40 for the cash games. I run a 20 player tourney. We have 1500 starting stacks, plus I have plenty for add-ons and color up.
Thanks for your suggestions. I enjoyed following the development of the Proteges on this website and always enjoyed your posts. I joined Chiptalk too late to get in on the pre-buy but still followed the development of this chip with interest.
I remember that there were a few QC issues, some of which have been fixed (such as the revised $1000 chip). However, there was also a problem with some of the Magus background designs being too light (I think the 25 cent and the $100 chip were the worst after the $1000). Do you know if production runs since the original run has addressed the problem of the Magus background design being too light, or are the present production runs still too light?
I held off purchasing these chips in hopes that the issues concerning the lightness of the background design would be resolved. It's been a year now so I'm looking into these chips again.
I put off purchasing a sample set originally as I wanted a sample set to reflect what I would be purchasing. Had I bought a sample set earlier I would not have the sample of the new $1000 chip. Before I pull the trigger on a complete set I'll certainly purchase samples. However, I'm willing to wait a little longer if the light Backgraound issue is yet to be resolved but future runs will be darker like the new $1000.
Thanks for your help and I look forward to other input on chip breakdown.
My .25 and $1 chips I just got in January. The rest of my chips are from the prebuy. It may just be me, but I do not see anything wrong with any of the backgrounds. I never received any $1000 so I cannot commenton those.
Thanks for your input, Cigar Herb. If some think the background is too light and others, like you, see nothing wrong with the background on the chips, the difference must be slight. I thought some of the pictures of the Proteges on this site made the background look a little light on some of the chips too; but photographs can fool. I guess it is an individual call that can only be resolved by looking at samples for myself.
If you're really going to be playing $2-4 limit or no limit with 200 $100 chips for dollar chips, I think you're going to need AT LEAST another rack of $100's and a rack of whatever you are going to use for the cash $5.
What are you going to set for a min buyin for the $2-4 game?
That may help clarify things.
