Poker Chips Buying Guide & Information

How many poker chips do I need for my game?

The following is rough guidance on how many poker chips you may need for your own poker evenings, followed by general advice on splits. You also need to take into account the variation of poker you will be playing and the betting tendencies of your mates:

<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="350"><tbody><tr><td class="categoriesTop" width="60%">Number of People Playing:</td><td class="categoriesTop" width="40%">Number of Poker Chips:</td></tr><tr><td>

3-4

</td><td>
300 Chips

</td></tr><tr><td>5-6

</td><td>400 Chips

</td></tr><tr><td>7-8

</td><td>500 Chips

</td></tr><tr><td>9 or more

</td><td>1000 Chips

</td></tr></tbody></table>

Re: Poker Chips Buying Guide & Information

I find that I can effectively run a game with up to eight players comfortably with only a 300 piece chipset. My 18 person tournament set has generous starting stacks and clocks in at roughly 650 chips.

I fail to see why you would need 1000 chips for a single table game. Please educate me.

This is C.T. so if he says we need more chips, then we need more chips.

That being said, 500 chips will work for 9 players but for more than that the 1K range helps.

Plus he is a sponsor and it's his job to sell more chips.

Re: Poker Chips Buying Guide & Information

Yeah, this is ChipTalk.net, isn't it!

I have a nice travel set of 324 chips (that's what fits in a "300" chip case) that will support a 10-player tourney, including color-ups.

. . . And then I have 1800 chips for a cash game! . . . And 700 chips for a 1-table high-limit, deep-stack game.

But those guidelines are a good starting point for someone who's found some nice chips he wants to buy!

Re: Poker Chips Buying Guide & Information

I want to get a 1000 tournament chip set, what breakdown should I get?

I have spent more time than most pondering this issue, in order to find a breakdown that will accommodate as many players as possible in as many different tournament structures as possible. Assuming that:
  1. You want a set with denominations.
  2. You want to run tournaments a variety of tournaments with 1500-20000 starting chips, freeze-outs and rebuys, and blinds starting at 25/50 or higher.
  3. You mostly have 1-2 tables, but want to be able to run significantly more in exceptional cases.
Then this is the optimal breakdown for you:

320 x T25-chips
315 x T100-chips
170 x T500-chips
165 x T1000-cips
40 x T5000-chips

Exactly. That's why these recommendations are WAY high for what you would normally need.

Which is the point I was inadvertently trying to make.

I was curious to see it there was any particular reason to be recommending such large amounts (aside from selling more chips).
