Chips: 322 | | | Micro-stakes cash set - 400 chips enough? I'm almost ready to order for the Black Sands group-buy but I'm just a bit edgy about how many chips I need (all of them! But seriously...) I figure 400 will be enough for 10 players but don't want to have to make change too often.
Here are my thoughts. Happy to hear any suggestions.
For 5c/10c NLHE, each player starts with:
5c x 10
25c x 14
$1 x 1-6 (for $5-$10 buy-in)
If we start to feel rich, for 10c/25c NLHE, each player starts with:
10c x 10 (non-denom does double-duty)
25c x 12
$1 x 11
$5 x 1 (for up to $20 buy-in)
Which means at minimum:
100x non-denom
140x 25c
110x $1
50x $5 (giving a reasonable number of re-buys)
+maybe 10x $20 just because I want a few black chips!
For those who've played more cash games than I, does this seem about right? Would I be better off going 100, 120, 120, 60 or do I want to have 14x25c per person in the 5c/10c game?
Thanks for reading!

Chips: 121 | | | Re: Micro-stakes cash set - 400 chips enough? Your breakdown looks good couple of questions for you to think about...
1. Are you planning to give $1's & $5's for rebuys and having players make change at the table?
2. With your proposed breakdown you wont have any non-denom or $0.25's left with after the start... That work for you?
Other than that it looks good. I too need to figure out my breakdown as well to get this going....

Chips: 529 | | | Re: Micro-stakes cash set - 400 chips enough? I have frequently played 5c/10c and 10c/25c games and have given some thought to breakdowns. It's not hard to use the ND chip as 5c in some games and as 10c in other games.
It is also not a problem that you use up all your two lowest value chips when handing out the starting stacks. It's perfectly fine to just hand out higher chips for rebuys.
100-140-110-50 = 400 chips
This lets you do 10/14/6 for starting stacks for 5c/10c games. I suspect this will be the better breakdown for the 5c/10c game because you won't need to make change quite so often.
100-120-120-60 = 400 chips
If you go with this, then you should use 10/10/7 as your starting stack for 5c/10c games. You may find people making change more often with only 100 quarters in play.
Either set lets you do 10/12/11/1 for your $20 buy-in at 10c/25c. This is an excellent starting stack that puts lots of chips onto the table and makes the $5 feel chip feel like something "special" since everyone starts with just one of them.
However, in both sets, you will have only enough chips for 10 to 12 rebuys (one rebuy = 4 x $5) in the 10c/25c game. That may be fine depending on your players. But it might not be enough. I have played in 10c/25c games with 10 players where 60 x $5 chips was not enough of a bank (especially since 10 of the $5 chips are in the starting stacks).
So you might want to consider buying a little more than 400 chips, adding to your 1s and 5s, and possibly including some 20s. Here are a couple of ideas:
ND-25c-$1-$5-$20
100-140-110-80-20 = 450 chips
100-160-140-80-20 = 500 chips
120-160-120-80-20 = 500 chips
Note also that you can let your ND chip act as a 50c chip or a $2 chip for other games, such as limit games.

100-140-110-80-20 = 450 chips | Thanks for the advice. I'm going with:
ND -25c- $1 -$5-$20
100-140-110-50-20 (plus some spares)
That way I have 3 rebuys per person at 5c/10c or 10c/25c

Chips: 3 | | | Re: Micro-stakes cash set - 400 chips enough? Interesting that your cash game starts has so few chips per player. In my local cash game, we like to start with 100 chips per player - mainly because it feels good, and makes re-buys unusual. The breakdown we use for our 5-50 spread limit game is: 40 nickels, 30 dimes, 20 quarters, 10 dollars. 100 chips total for $20. Works out really nicely, except the nickel-dime step is not very meaningful.
Anyway, this is just me registering some surprise that cash games exist with so few chips per player! |

Chips: 322 | | | Re: Micro-stakes cash set - 400 chips enough? Ended up buying
Non-denom: 100
25c: 140
$1: 120
$5: 50
$20: 20 (just because I wanted them and so the set can grow in limits up to 25c/50c)
We tried out the same structure with my tournament set (switching $ for cents) and it worked ok. Bets tended to be in multiples of 25c and some change-making was needed but it's workable.
In contrast, I can't imagine needing 1000 chips for 10 players but something in-between would probably be optimal for me. I just wasn't willing to buy (many) more.
Thanks all for the advice.
