HU breakdown help

I am looking to make a HU set that works for both limit and NL HU tournies. They are going to be non denoms. 100-200 chips preferably

That's not many chips to work with! How many simultaneous games do you want to be able to run? If you want to be able to do 4 games at once, that's 8 players, so 200 chips would be 25 per player. If you had 16 starters you'd need to run the first round in two stages.

I would suggest the following stacks and following blinds for NL:

8xT25
8xT100
8xT500

Level 1 (optional): 25-50
Level 2: 50-100
Level 3: 75-150
Level 4: 100-200
Level 5: 150-300
Level 6: 200-400

You can stop the increases at level 4 or 5 and let the games play out to avoid it becoming too much of a crapshoot. At each round, reset the stacks and blinds.

Limit is a little tricker, since I have less experience with it, but I'd suggest using the same stacks and the following levels:

Level 1 (optional): 50-100
Level 2: 100-200
Level 3: 200-400
Level 4: 300-600
Level 5: 500-1000

The increases here may be a little harsh, but I've found our limit HU games go on a long while if we don't aggressively raise the blinds. Again, you could stop at level 4 to stop it being so much of a crapshoot.

This would need 64 chips of each type, for a total of 192 chips.

Re: HU breakdown help

Thanks. I don't plan on ever having more than 2 games at the same time guess I should have put that in the OP

Ah! Well in that case, you could either drop the number of chips you buy and go for 4x24 = 96 chips, or you could stick with 8x24 = 192 and make the stacks a little more generous:

T1500:

15xT5
13xT25
11xT100

This gives 39 chips per player, and (if you're keeping 64 of each denom) gives you enough chips to colour up T5 to T25 and T25 to T100 at whatever points this becomes needed. The blind schedule I'd suggest for this would be (NL):

10/20
15/30
25/50
35/75
50/100

Since you're planning on using non denom chips, you'd be able to have generous stacks when you only have 2 games, or stingy stacks when you have 4.

Re: HU breakdown help

I prefer to play heads-up tournaments where each round gets completed before starting the next, and blinds get reset. Having said that, it's more fun if you start with the chips you just won (so double the amount you had in round 1), so you can just double the blinds structure and start over. You generally only need 2 denominations in play for heads-up games. Thus, it's best if the smallest denomination is 1/4 of the larger.

Starting stacks:
20 x T25 = 500
20 x T100 = 2000
--------------------
40 chips = 2500

Blinds start at 25/50 (having 50xBB is fine for heads up; don't need to be deeper than that, IMO). Maybe 10 minutes per level (or longer if you prefer, but you can get a lot of hands played in 10 minutes... unless everybody dramatizes every hand).

25/50
50/100
100/200
150/300
200/400
250/500

This pretty much guarantees each round will be done within an hour.
(just have the blinds double every round if you want it to go a little quicker)

If you'd like to start with twice the chips for the 2nd round (i.e. T5000), then you can colour-up some of the $25s as necessary, and double the blinds above.

For 4 players, I'd recommend a 200-chip set with:

80 x $25 (2000)
80 x $100 (8000)
40 x $500 (20000)

Then if you want to double the starting stacks (T10000) and blinds (i.e. now starting at 100/200) for a 3rd round (i.e. for double-elimination with 4-players), you can colour-up the $25s completely (if you haven't already done so by the end of round 2) and you're good-to-go!
