Looking to buy my first set of 500 chips and looking for some help on the breakdown. Usually play a small tournament with 6-8 people.

You don't mention starting chips so I'll be general.

120 x T25
160 x T100
100 x T500
100 x T1000
20 x T5000

Will allow T5000 up to 10 players with rebuys or a T10k freeze out with color ups for the T25s and T100s.

Should've mentioned each chip has to be multiples of 25, was thinking of this

5 x 75
25 x 175
100 x 150
500 x 75
1000 x 25

I'd recommend similar to Matthew,

125 - $25
175 - $100
100 - $500
75 - $1000
25 - $5000

Same reasons as Matt, but also you can use the set for cash, using the $25 as a quarter and the $100 as a $1 and so on.
