Chips: 35 | | | Smallest starting number of chips per player (T5000)? Hi!
Knowing the price of the paulsons or custom ASM, i try to figure out what is the smallest starting number of chips per player (dont want to spend 500$ on a new set)? Is there a setup you use at your regular games that works fine? 15 chips? 20 chips? Without having everybody asking for change every minutes?
I currently use this setup (starting blinds at 25/50), who is great, but want another setup with less chips.
12 x 25$
7 * 100$
4 * 500$
2 * 1000$
-----------
25 chips (i use a 300 tikikings chipset) |

8 x 25$
8 x 100$
4 x 500$
2 x 1000$
------------
22 chips
Even then, players will likely have to make change regularly, but that would be the absolute lowest number I'd go with. It's similar to the WSOP initial distribution for the T10,000 ME. |

Well, there is always the trade-off between having a compact (frugal) set and giving your players a nice-sized starting stack. The WSOP Main Event in 2005 started with 23 chips each, but they bumped it up to 29 chips in 2006.
I would put 20 as the minimum stack size. Any less than that just doesn't seem like you're getting your money's worth.
The lowest denom ($25s) should have fewer chips, and more of the next denom which will be the workhorse. So I think your 12 x $25s is too many. For instance, we have a long-running $5,000 tourney with 8/13/3/2 starting stack, 26 chips.
The most compact would be 8/8/4/2 (22 chips) but there might not enough $100s for betting. This is the WSOP 2005 stack (without a $5K chip to bring it up to $10K.) |

Chips: 14,781 | | | Re: Smallest starting number of chips per player (T5000)? You can get away with a 400 chip set for 10 players. For T5k start with ...
12 x T25 (120 chips)
12 x T100 (120 chips)
7 x T500 (70 chips plus 30 to color up T25 and T100)
Add 60 x T1000 chips to the set and you've got 10 rebuys covered or use 50 of those chips in the starting stacks for freeze out T10k Tournament.
To increase to 20 players you can bump up to a 600 chip set.
8 x T25 (160 chips)
8 x T100 (160 chips plus 40 to color up T25)
4 x T500 (80 chips plus 40 to color up T100)
2 x T1000 (40 chips)
That's 520 chips. Add in 60 x T1000 (can be used for 6 rebuys or to color up the T500s) and add in 20 x T5000 (can be used for 20 rebuys or to increase to a T10k tourney)
Summary:
400 chips will do a 10 person T5k with 10 rebuys or a freeze out T10k.
120 x T25, 120 x T100, 100 x T500, 60 x T1000
Starting stacks 12 x T25, 12 x T100, 7 x T500 (31 chips)
600 chips will do a 20 person T5k with 20 rebuys or a freeze out T10k
160 x T25, 200 x T100, 120 x T500, 100 x T1000, 20 x T5000
Starting stacks 8 x T25, 8 x T100, 4 x T500, 2 x T1000 (22 chips)

12 x T25, 12 x T100, 7 x T500
96 x T25 (make it 100)
96 x T100 (plus 24 to color up the T25s = 120 total)
56 x T500 (make it 60)
This is 280 chips total - add in 20 x T1000 or what ever you want.
Or
120 x T25, 120 x T100, 50 x T500, 10 x T1000 for 300 chips (start 12, 12, 5, 1)
This will give you up to 10 players at T5000, but no chips to color up or rebuy with a full 10 players, but has room to color up for 8 players.
or
80 x T25, 150 x T100, 50 x T500, 20 x T1000 for 300 chips (start 8, 13, 5, 1)
Again 10 players, and allows the T25s to be colored up by the extra 20 T100s and gives some extra T1000s to remove some T100s as it gets shorthanded.

Chips: 3,968 | | | Re: Smallest starting number of chips per player (T5000)? I hate to oversimplify this, but the smallest starting stack in a T5,000 for 8 players would be 1 T5,000 chip. Your whole set would be 8 chips. Maybe 12 if you wanted to allow for some re-buys.

This assumes a max of 10 players. You would need:
80 x $25
100 x $100
100 x $500 50 x $1000
330 chips total
You could add twenty more 25s, then with 8 or less players you could use the 12/12/7 breakdown. That's just 350 chips. |

I like having more chips in front of me.
You could always add some larger denom chips or plaques to augment your set instead of purchasing a new set.
