Chips: 18 | | | 1,000 Chip Set for Home Game Tournament I recently found a really nice four tone color chip set from ebay for a good price and has denominations of $1,$5,$25,$50,$100,$500,$1,000 available. The good thing i thought was with this set I can also use this for if we end up bumping up to a $1/$2 nl cash game level, this set could accomodate that play with the 1's, 5's and 25's. I wanted to be able to host tournaments with this set and i kind of proposed this breakdown to also accomodate the 1's for the my cash game, i wouldn't be using the $1's for tournament play.
100 $1's
250 $5's
150 $25's
150 $50's
200 $100's
100 $500's
50 $1,000's
Does anyone have any further advice on how to get the maximum value out of this set with these denominations and with my intentions. We'd probably have never anymore than 9 people playing a 1/2 game, plus i can even use the 5,25,and 50 as cents too, which right now we usually play a .25c/.50c cash game when we play ring style. Might have max 2 tables going for a tournament with probably 18 people max, mostly a single table tournament format of 8-11 players is a normal amount for me right now. |

The only reason I'd keep a few 50s (no more than 100; more likely 50) would be to use as small blind if you ever want to play $0.50/$1 cash games.
Having said that, I agree with 4ceps. It's generally best to decide on a tournament structure that you'll use most often and build your set around that. With my first set of chips, I tried to make a very versatile set for all sorts of different tournament structures (from T100-T10,000), then found I generally only run a few types (mostly T1000 - T2000), so I hardly, if ever, use some of the denominations. In hindsight, I should've concentrated on just a few (4 or 5) denominations.
Besides, later you might want a different set of chips to be your cash set (especially if they might get used by players who've busted out of a tournament that's continuing at another table). You don't want there to be any chance of players sneaking a $25 (relatively low-valued) tournament chip into the cash game... |

Chips: 18 | | | Re: 1,000 Chip Set for Home Game Tournament Thanks to all that replied, i appreciate it. You guys pretty much hit it head on, i usually play 1,000 or 2,000 starting stacks. It all depends which people play in regards to the rebuys. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. The cap for our cash games now as we generally play like a .25/.50 nl , is max buy in for $25. We don't cap what you can have in play in front of you. I know in no limit that some people have a chip down cap in nl, no one can have anymore than $50 in play or whatever and if you do, just put those chips in your pocket. The cash games are usually short handed so we don't usually have huge pots all night long with really big swings. |
