I want to get a general idea of how many chips you guys have in play at the end of a tournament.

We have about 200 chips in play with 10-12 players.

Our weekly single-table T5000 rebuy tourney generally breaks down to a little under 100 each of the T500 and T1000 chips. The most that we ever have out on the table is about 500, which drops to 350 or so when the T25s are raced off, and down to 200 or less at the end.

We have enough chips to play with big stacks, but the group isn't into it. I think it's hard for many people to make sense of big stacks containing multiple denominations.

Huge amount of variance here.

It depends on the starting stack, blind structure and when the color up is.

It would typically end when there's about 50 big blinds at the table, but the amount of chips depends on the structure.

I had a 12 person T10,000 last tuesday and it ended when the blinds were at 2000/4000, but only for a couple hands. Since there were only $1000 chips at the table after the color up, there were 120, $1000 chips on the table.

If someone at the tourney complained that there were too many chips, you should ban them. It's blasphomy.

Well, It looks like I'm with the majority of 150-200 chips in play .

Usually once it's heads up, we'll color-up again to reduce the number of chips to a "reasonable amount", which is usually somewhere between 100 and 200 (big stack would have somewhere around 80-120).

I usually do this too, but our game has an attitude of "oh it's almost over, let's finish!".

Well, same here (re: attitude), but usually there's at least one or two guys waiting around for a cash game to start or whatever, and they'll assist in quickly replacing stacks of 2nd-highest denoms with highest just so it's easier to tell who's in the lead, etc.
