1000 chip set with 5 denoms for a 20 person T10000 toruney

I am picking up a 1000 chip tourney set that has 5 denoms in it:
25
100
500
1000
5000

I have the ability to creat the chip set somewhat how I want. I used the HPT chip breakdown:
400 x 25's
300 x 100's
200 x 500's
50 x 1000's
50 x 5000's

According to the breakdown it should work for a 20 person T10000 with starting stacks of:
12 x 25
12 x 100
3 x 500
2 x 1000
1 x 5000

That should leave plenty of chips for rebuys and color ups

Does this look right? What would you change?
Thanks for the help
J

Personally, I don't like the idea of having a T5,000 chip with a starting stack of T10,000. Perhaps a little later on in the tournament, but it seems early to have one chip representing half of your stack. Maybe a few more 500s/1000s?

Re: 1000 chip set with 5 denoms for a 20 person T10000 toruney

Using 12/12/3/2/1 as your starting stack, the maximum chips you would need for 20 people (without rebuys) is 240/300/120/100/40, or 800 total. This would let you color-up all denoms completely until you have only $5,000s left, which is really overkill.

When you add rebuys, it depends on what chip stack you are going to give out for the rebuy. If you give the original stack, you'll need a lot more $25s, which is kinda a waste since you're going to color them up anyway.

I would suggest 300/400/150/100/50 which would give you a bunch of rebuys and also enough chips to color up so you only have $5,000, $1,000, and maybe some $500 left at the end.

IMO it's always a mistake to buy too many of the lowest denom chips for a tourney set. Use fewer $25s and buy more $100s and $500s -- you get more $$$ value for the same amount you spend on a set.

If you had a night with lots more players and/or rebuys, you could support 36 starting stacks of 8/8/4/2/1 (which was the 2005 WSOP stack).

The standard recommendation here is to have less T25 chips. The reasoning is because they mostly just get used for blinds in the early rounds and then you end up coloring them up. Even starting with 12 T25 chips in each starting stack, for 20 people you only need 240 total T25s, not 400 (12 x 20 = 240).

For my personal 1,000 chip Bellagio set I have the following breakdown:

240 x T25
300 x T100
200 x T500
160 x T1,000
100 x T5,000

I also have 25 extra T25,000 chips in case I want to run a T50k tournament (which is also the reason I have 100 T5,000 chips). So basically I recommend getting only 240 T25 chips and getting more T1,000s and probably more T5,000s too.

You can easily run a 30-person T10,000 tournament with this breakdown...and have enough to color up everything and cover rebuys by giving out two T5,000 chips for each rebuy.

LOL. You beat me...and to think you were the first person I thought of when I read the original post. You're always there to shed the wisdom of tournament chip breakdowns the instant someone posts asking for suggestions.

Re: 1000 chip set with 5 denoms for a 20 person T10000 toruney

I agree with the above. You will need more 100s than 25s. But with a 500 chip and a 1000 chip, I would get at least as many 1000s as 500s to use the chips the most effectively.

I would look at 250/300/200/200/50 which will let you run 20 people at 12/12/6/5/0 and 30 people at 8/8/2/3/1.

I got away with 820 condado's and it was perfect for a 20+ T10000 with rebuys.

Re: 1000 chip set with 5 denoms for a 20 person T10000 toruney

Another plug for less $25 denom chips and more $100's & $500's. I've been recently playing around with the WSOP starting stacks of:
12 - $25 (240)
7 - $100 (200)
4 - $500 (120)
2 - $1000 (40)
1 - $5000 (80; 40 for 20 rebuys, 20 for starting stacks, & 20 to color up $500's)
TOTAL: 680 chips
OR
8 - $25 (160)
8 - $100 (200)
8 - $500 (200)
5 - $1000 (100)
0 - $5000 (60; 40 for 20 rebuys & 20 extra to color up $500's if you want)
TOTAL: 720 chips

These amounts will leave you enough to fully color up the $25's & $100's. I realize you won't probably be having 20 rebuys, but I always plan a little bit over with my chips. You can eliminate some of the $5000's if you like. If you want 1000 chips, I would just round up to the nearest 25, 50, or 100 to make things nice and even

I don't know if you have this already, but it helps a lot:
http://www.captlego.com/breakdown/breakdown_6.html

My starting stacks for a 24 person T10,000 tourney are going to be one of the two above or:
12 - $25 (240; round to 250)
12 - $100 (300)
9 - $500 (240; round to 250)
4 - $1000 (80; round to 100)
0 - $5000 (0; buy 60 for rebuys or possilby a T20,000)

Just my thoughts, good luck!

-smitty
