Small Cash Set

Hi everyone,

I am having to sell my large pharaoh NCV set in order to pay off student loans for myself and my future wife (marrying her in December). Although this is hard for me, I am going to replace them with hopefully some faux clays so we can still enjoy playing some low limit home games with friends. We generally like to play .25/.50, and probably won't deviate from that. I know these stakes are low for most of you high rollers out there, but we have to be realistic since we're both just starting out in the world. Anyway, I'd like to put together a little cash set, around 300 in chips that could be used for around 6-8 people with a $15-$25 buy in and a few chips left over for re-buys.

My breakdown scheme would be as follows.

220 $0.25 chips
60 $1.00 chips
20 $5.00 chips

What do you guys think, will this work for what we're looking for.

Man this stinks though downgrading from pharaoh's. Hopefully the faux's will feel as good as everyone claims they will.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Small Cash Set

Bummer.

I'd do far fewer 0.25, honestly. I've found that if people have more $1 chips they are more likely to bet them Good players will usually use a bare minimum of fractionals to make a bet anyway.

how about:
100 @ .25
180 @ 1
20 @ 5

That's $305, total. If 10 ppl buy in for $20 you obviously have $200 on the table. You could always do "twenties play" if you run out of chips.

Re: Small Cash Set

I think it's too many .25 chips. You've only got about $200 in total chips with 8 peopl ein for $25 yur out of rebuys. I would recommend

125- .25
125 - 1.00
40 - 5.00
10 - 20.00

gives you over $300 in chips and 10 $20 rebuys
We play .25/.50 and .50/1.00 and try not to have more than 8 small chips per person, as smoore said most hands a raise will be to $1 so the .25 will be overkill. You ca start with 12 -.25 chip, 12 - $1 and 1 - $5. If your bets tend to stay under a buck the 12 - .25 will be OK, but will probably be superfluous. You could jump to 13 - $1 and use 8 - .25, then you could drop your .25 to around 100 chips and bump your ones 15 and fives 10 more or vice versa. This allows for long nights if some folks decide to bring bigger wads to the game

Re: Small Cash Set

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I really like the idea of reducing the 0.25 and hadn't really thought of it until you guys mentioned it. From a gaming standpoint, I'm assuming it would be best to run these as pot limit, but I could be wrong. One more quick question.

Since the set does not comprise of a large number of chips, I'm assuming there will be numerous "chip trading" from the big stack at the table. Is this actually the case with a small amount of chips, and if it is, is it generally a problem?

Re: Small Cash Set

Usually only when your out of .25's, you can ask for change, but the small chips are only for blinds usually as a hand gets raised usually in dollar increments. It's not like eveyone is constantly asking for change, if you win a pot, even a small one your recharged with small chips. Only once in a while does th echange need to be made, but it's better than having $25 in quarters in front of you.

We play no limit usually, so rebuys are a-plenty. we played .25/.50 the other night with 10 folks, we had about $400-$600 on the table. I know this is small stakes to the guys that play 1/2 -2/4 or 3/6

I made $9 in the cash game...was in for $60, borrowed $20 when I went broke and made it all back in about 4 hands plus $9.

I then went on the lose $20 outside when taking a leak...or maybe I bought into the late tourney twice by mistake...

When a person goes broke, you give them big chips then they grab smaller denoms from the big stacks.

That would be great....too bad I'm not very good at poker and I'm a cheapo. I actually prefer the nickel, dime, quarter games, but all my friends like the "big boy" stakes of .25/.50...haha.

I have to finish this last semester of classes and then I'll have a lot more free time. Thanks for the props on the engagement...too bad with this engagement comes the selling of my pharaoh's . I really hope the faux clays are as nice as everyone says so it won't be too much of a downgrade.

It must be a very large set of Pharaohs. I mean large enough that it will put an appreciable dent in your student loans. Given the low interest rates and the fact that you have like forever to pay them off, it must be something of a hard decision to sell them off.

Still, you can always buy another nice clay set someday.

Re: Small Cash Set

Well it's not too large....it's right at 1000 chips. Problem is with my student loans as well as my fiancee's, things are going to be tight. Basically between coming up with money for an apartment or renting a house, furniture, month to month living expenses such as utilites and groceries, and all those other great things that go along with moving out on your own, I feel like I have to give up the pharaoh's. Plus, I've got a credit card I'd like to knock out before taking the plunge , so hopefully the pharaoh's will knock some of that out.

Now, if I could only get to 50 chips so I could post it in the M2M forum....
