Cash game - if a 50 cent chip is your lowest denomination...?
...do you think your second denom should be a $1 chip or a $2 chip.
I've been playing around with different breakdowns on a spreadsheet and I'm starting to like the look of having a $2 chip as my second denom. Looks like the $1 chip would be unnecessary with a .50 chip.
What do you think?
3rd denom would be $5, and 4th denom would be $20.
What do you think of these chip handouts using the .50 chip and $2 chip as the two lowest denoms (please treat the blinds as an unchangeable part of this set up)?
Game details...no limit hold 'em
$40 buyin with blinds at .50/$1: Chips per player: 20 x .50 = $10 15 x $2 = $30 -------------- 35 chips totaling $40
$50 buyin with blinds at .50/$1: Chips per player: 20 x .50 = $10 20 x $2 = $40 -------------- 40 chips totaling $50
$100 buyin with blinds at $1/$2: Chips per player: 20 x .50 = $10 20 x $2 = $40 10 x $5 = $50 -------------- 50 chips totaling $100
Re: Cash game - if a 50 cent chip is your lowest denomination...?
Practicality meets tradition? So who wins?
In my book, stay with the $1 chip. Technically, a 50c/$2 chip combo is perfect for a 1/2 limit or 50c/1 NL but it just doesn't seem right to me.
That being said, I have owned a set of chips with a $2 chip and play in a regular game that uses $2 chips (1/2 limit). I regret having bought the $2 chips for my set and would have been happier with just $1 and $5 chips instead of $1, $2 and $5 chips. As for the other game, they are retired Paulsons and that is simply the chips that came in the set so we use what we have.

I'd stick with the $1. Forcing people to do the math of counting by $2's, especially when combined with drinking, is going to result in more problems than you might think. $1's and $5's are just easier. Trust me.
