Chip set breakdown - cash & tournament

OK, now that I've got my chip design nailed down

http://http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/303474-post30.html

I need to figure out my chip set breakdown. I'd like to do one set that can be used for both cash and tournament play. Normally have 8 players (counting myself), and play $20 buyin cash games. I'd like to add the ability to run a single table T1000 or T2000 game as well. Without knowing any better, here's what I come up with so far -

150 Pink - .05
200 White - .25
150 Blue - 1.00
200 Red - 5.00
150 Green - 25.00
100 Black - 100.00
50 Purple - 500.00

For the cash game, per player, I'd hand out

15 Pink (total 0.75)
21 White (total 5.25)
14 Blue (total 14.00)

for a total of $20. On the tournament side (T2000), I'd use

20 Red (total 100.00)
16 Green (total 400.00)
10 Black (total 1000.00)
1 Purple (total 500.00)

for a total of $2000. What I'm concerned about is coloring up, etc. What I like about this setup is that as players get kicked out of the tournament, they could get a small cash game going on the side without using any of the tournament chip.

Am I on the right track? What does everythink?

Thanks!

Re: Chip set breakdown - cash & tournament

the cash set looks right on.

for the tourney - i would drop the number of reds and increase green and black

100 red
200 green
150 black
50 purple

or even

100 red
200 green
160 black
40 purple

Re: Chip set breakdown - cash & tournament

OK. So if I go to

100 Red
200 Green
160 Black
40 Purple

what kind of distribution would you recommend? Something like

10 Red (total $50)
18 Green (total $450)
10 Black (total $1000)
1 Purple (total $500)

Or something else that might make more sense?

That works for 10 players for the initial buy in. Rebuys can be covered with green and black.

Not to confuse your decision more - just pointing out additional options:
Blinds of 5/10 with starting T5000 is little low:

You could concievably eliminate the T5 and start blinds 25/25 or 25/50.

In that case :
200 Green
200 Black
100 Purple
or
120 Green
200 Black
120 Purple
60 T1000 chip of a 4th color.

Re: Chip set breakdown - cash & tournament

I agree that tourneys that start with just green, black, and purple are the way to go. Then you could use the red $5 chip as a rebuy chip in your cash game.

Personally, I'd not use a .05 label at all. Make your pink (or yellow) chip a nondenominational (ND) chip.

Then you could use it as .05 for .05/.10 blinds or use it as .10 for .10/.20 or .10/.25 cash game blinds.

The other advantage is you could use it at the high end of your tournament if you wanted.

Cash game: ND as .10, .25 (white), 1.00 (blue), 5.00 (red)

.10/.25 game: $20 = 10 ND, 20 white, 9 blue, 1 red = 40 chips each
.25/.50 game: $20 = 20 white, 15 blue = 35 chips each

Rebuys use just reds.

Tourney: T25 (green), T100 (black), T500 (purple), ND as T1000 or T2500

T1500 = 12g + 12k
T2000 = 12g + 12k + 1p
T2500 = 16g + 16k + 1p

Rebuys use just purples.

Re: Chip set breakdown - cash & tournament

Thanks - that seems to make a lot of sense. I've started re-thinking the .05 denom, and may end up dropping it in favor of an ND.

Thanks.

I know this is not a popular view. But if you want a really flexible set for cash AND tourney, consider a non-denominated set.

I have a 4-color non-denom set, that can handle just about anything cash or tourney. Very versitile (I think it may even be able to parallel park)
