Talking Ideal tourney 4 color chip breakdown for 1200 chips?

I'm making a set of 1200 chips with denominations 25, 100, 500, and 1000. I was wondering what the ideal chip distribution would be for each in a tournament style game. I also might be adding a 5000 chip to the set. In that case there would be 5 colors and how would that change the distribution? Thanks for any help!

Re: Ideal tourney 4 color chip breakdown for 1200 chips?

How many players??
What kind of starting stack??

That's going to determine how many 25s and 100s you need. The 500s, 1ks, and 5ks are almost an afterthought, as you pretty much know exactly how many you'll need in play just through coloring up.

Generally, for a 20 person T2500 tourney, I like to have big stacks on the table at all times, and not worry so much about coloring up until I have to, so I generally only have three denoms for the entire tournament, and just have a lot of them. I wouldn't even bother with 1ks or 5ks... just keep the 500s on the table at the end.

Considering you could want extra 500s for rebuys or add-ons, I'd probably do something like:

400x(25)
500x(100)
300x(500)

Starting stacks are 20x(25) and 20x(100), with blinds starting at 25/50. Use the extra hundred (100) chips to color-up the 400x(25)s in play when they start getting in the way. Then gradually color-up the 500x(100) in play with a hundred of the (500)s. Use the extra (500)s to let people re-buy and add-on.

Of course, that's just me, who likes to have a LOT of chips on the table, rather than making it really small and stream-lined. A lot of other guys would prefer starting stacks much smaller, and coloring up to (500)s, (1000)s, and (5000)s.

It all depends on how many players you need to stretch those 1200 chips across.

400 x 100
400 x 500

Talking Re: Ideal tourney 4 color chip breakdown for 1200 chips?

Thanks guys, sorry about the wait. So my hope is to be able to host a 20 person tourney and have a medium amount of chips in play. I just want there to be big stacks of chips when it comes down to the final 3-5 players. I would probably only allow the chance for one re-buy and blinds would start 25/50, probably jump them every 20-30 minutes. Thanks for the help!

Okay... thanks for the info, that gives us a lot clearer picture of how you should split up the chips.

So, you need twenty initial buy-ins. Starting at 25/50 blinds, you'll want your starting stacks around T2500 for an average tournament, or T5000 for a deeper stack tourney.

To get a nice medium stack for each player (around 30 chips), figure you'll need:
12x(25)
12x(100)
2x(500) (for the T2500, 7 for the T5000).

So, you know you'll need 240 (make that 250, just to be even) $25 chips, along with 250 $100 chips.

Then, figure you'll have at least 10 rebuys, which can be made up of $500 chips (5 for a T2500, 10 for a T5000).

So, you know you'll need at least 250 $500 chips (without coloring up).

That's 750 chips right there. Figure another 100x$100 to color-up the 25s, another 100x$500 to color up the 100s, and 50x$1000 to round out the set.

Thats 250/350/350/50, for a 1000 chip set.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Say you want to go with what I was talking about, with larger chip stacks in play (more lower-denoms)....

Starting stacks: 20x(25), 20x(100) for a T2500 [+5x(500) if you're playing T5000]

So, you'll now need 400x$25, 400x$100, and 100x$500 to start, plus another 100x$100 to color-up the 25s, another 100x$500 to color-up the 100s. Figure the same 100x$500 for the additional rebuys. That's 1200 chips right there.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, if you want to get 1000 chips, you can do the first scenario. If you want to get 1200 chips (like you were talking about before) you can do either.

400x(25)
500x(100)
250x(500)
50x(1000)

That's just my opinion on it though.

Re: Ideal tourney 4 color chip breakdown for 1200 chips?

I decided to go with a 1300 chip set for T2500 tourneys. I wanted relatively large stacks of chips starting out and wanted to keep the different colors in multiples of 100 chips (I use chip boxes). Here's what I went with:

Green (T25) x 500
Black (T100) x 500
Purple (T500) x 200
Yellow (T1000) x 100

This easily supports up to 24 players with relatively large initial chip stacks:

Green x 20
Black x 15
Purple x 1

and gives enough of each color for completely color up the previous color.

The set can also support up to 30 players using a (still relatively large) initial chip setup of:

Green x 16
Black x 15
Purple x 1
