Breakdown and blinds for my chips

Hi!

I just bought my first chips (500x 13,5g Clay).
Not the best but it's just for a weekly homegame with my friends, so we don't need coins any more.

I have
150 white chips
150 red chips
100 blue chips
50 green chips
and 50 black chips.

I want to make it like this: 1$/2$/5$/10$/25$
But I read everyone uses them like this: 1$/5$/10$/25$/50$

So what makes sense and why?
Another question how can I find a good value for the first blinds (I thought about starting with 5$/10$)?

Thanks, TimoS1703

Re: Breakdown and blinds for my chips

Well the colors you have match the first set of denoms you listed (At least in AC they do....but you can make the colors any value you want).

As far as the 1/2/5/10/25 breakdown you can feel free to use it, they are your chips. But the "normal" progression of chips is to have the next higher denom be 4-5 times bigger than the previous, especially when it comes to tournamet chips (cash game? different story). With the 4-5 times progression there are fewer chips to color up, and you need a lesser amount of chips to color up: for example if you used your breakdown 1/2/5/10/25 in a tournament setting when it came time to remove the 1 chips you would need 75 2 chips, compare that to using only 15 10 chips. Then if you compare the other breakdown 1/5/10/25/50 when you go to color up the 1 chips you only need a handful of 5 chips and you could use the 25 and 50 chips, and eventually you could possibly color up the 5 and maybe even the 10 chips depending on the starting stack and the number of players in your game.

Now I would say the most sensible tournament progression would be something like 1/5/25/100/500/1000. The 500 to 1000 step has been debated several times, and many suggest moving to 2500, but I don't, mainly because they don't have a 2500 chip at the WSOP.

As I said earlier these are your chips, you can make them any value you want, but if I could offer one more peice of advice I would suggest only giving out 2 or 3 colors for a tournament, especially if you chips don't have denoms. It will save you a lot of hassle explaining what all the chip values are over and over again.

Hope this helped...

I'll agree with the rest of what Capt said here as well. My thoughts on the 1000 vs 2000 or 2500 issue... I somewhat dislike the fact that it's only twice as much as the previous chip, but it's much easier to think in thousands and not 2000s or 2500s (at least for metric-using folk). Easy to deal with 25, since we are all quite familiar with quarters

Our T10,000 tournaments use 25/100/500/1000 (and 5000) chips, though we don't often get many 5000s in play with only 6-8 people. I'm considering cutting back the starting stacks to not have any 1000 chips as we do currently, introducing them with colourups. But I'm sure that would be met with resistance, since everybody loves to have a few "big" chips to bet (even if it's only twice as much as the next chip down).

But yeah, 2-3 colours on the table at a time for tournaments is plenty. Maybe 4, depending. I wouldn't go with more, it gets cumbersome and confusing especially without denoms labelled on the chips somehow.

Last part 1st - if you're starting at 5/10 for blinds in a tourney - you don't need 1 or 2 value chips.

Starting at 5/10 - go with a 5/25/100/500 - and you probably won't even ever use the 500.

for the:
T5 - 100 chips
T25 - 150 chips
T100 - 100 chips - will probably get you through.
T500 - 50 chips - if you need them

consider a T200 format using 1-5-25
Blinds starting 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10, 10/20, 15/30, 20/40, 25/50, 50/100, 100/200.

150 white chips - use as 25's
150 red chips - use as 5's
100 blue chips - use as 1's
50 green chips
and 50 black chips.

Just something to think about - I'm sure you'll make it work.
