chip breakdown for small group

this is gonna sound a little wierd but i'm looking for a 1000 chip breakdown for about 10 players.. were all pretty new players and we've been playing a ring game about once a week for the past year or so... we've got some dice chips, a set by buddy got from marlboro, and some labeled plastic/slug chips that my other buddy got for like $10 for 500. anyways, we wanted some better chips, considered all-ins and a whole bunch of other (i got a LOT of samples) we settled on nexgens and we all chipped in (no pun intended) and we have about $200.. i can get 1000 nexgens and a case from discountcasinogear.com for $150 so thats what i'm doing..

now that you have all the background... i dont have any idea what colors to get or anything.. we play $.05 -$.10 NL or $.10 -.$20 NL with either $10 or $20 buyin respectively.. a few of us are interested in playing tourneys every so often instead of a cash game.. i considered not having denoms on the chips but i decided that would be too confusing... we have some players that are errr 'dizzy' (girlfriends) and when they have problems even when the denoms are on the chips! so yeah, we're gonna label the chips and have denoms on them.. i thought a broad range of colors would be good since theres not really a huge chance of more then 10 players showing up and we dont know what kindof tourney we want etc.. i dunno... i dont know what i'm doing .. please help me

That is a great idea. 1000 is plenty for both.

Here is a single set. If you are going cash and tourney, then a non-denominated set is best. Next best thing would be to simply drop the $ sign and have just the number. That way the 5 can be $0.05 or $5.00, 25 is $0.25 or $25.00... I would not use a 10 value chip. It‘s only double the next lowest denom, and will take up a lot of your set. That said, here goes (note: you will need to order in multiples of 50 with Nexgen)

400 red-5 (consider leaving this one non-denom)
300 green-25
200 black-100
100 purple-500

I just threw in traditional chip colors, but they can be whatever you like. That set is more than enough for any cash game you have, and you can easily cover 36 people for a T1000 tourney with plenty extra to color up at each level.

Re: chip breakdown for small group

Well, 1,000 chips is way more than you need for 10 people. But since when has this board been about NEED?!?

If you're going to label your chips then I suggest 2 overlapping sets for cash and tournament use. Even the blondest player can keep that straight....

One decision for your cash/NL set would be if you want 5˘ and 10˘ chips. Normally you'd just get 5˘ and 25˘ chips for a small cash game, but if you play 10˘/20˘ NL you might want to get dimes in addition to nickels. Otherwise you can get a bunch of nickels and use them for all the blinds up to 20˘.

For a tourney set you need to decide what starting stack you want to use. If you start with amounts like you'd see online -- T$1,000 or T$1,500 chips -- then you should get $5, $25, $100 and probably $500 denominations. If you want a big starting stack like T$10,000, you should bump up one denomination and get something like $25/100/500/1000s.

So here's what I might suggest as a generous set if you want to buy 1,000:

100 x 5˘
100 x 10˘
150 x 25˘
200 x $1
100 x $5 (used for both cash and tourney)
150 x $25
150 x $100
50 x $500

Tourney set assumes T$1,500 starting stack using $5/25/100s.

Re: chip breakdown for small group

thanks for the help jambine and tomb. i dont think we'll ever have more than 15 people. theres 6 of us that ALWAYS play rain or shine but tonight we actually have 10 people coming.
i thought maybe i'd just put numbers on the chips without any $ or ˘ that way i could do something like this:

200 - 5 (5˘ for our cash game)
150 - 25
200 - 100 ($1 cash)
150 - 500
100 - 1000
50 - 5000

850 - total chips

thats two tourney sets over lapping T1,000 and T10,000. it leaves me with an extra 150 chips though. i was going to make them worth 10 but i dunno if i wanna do that.. i think everyone would be ok with getting rid of the 10˘ chips. maybe i could add 50 more 25 and 500 and 1000 so that we could do something inbetween T1000 and T10000 if we wanted. whats a good breakdown for 500 chips for a T5000?

Re: chip breakdown for small group

I run a T5000 tourny about once a month and use the following 500 piece chipset:

t25 x 150
t100 x 200
t500 x 100
t1000 x 50

Starting stacks:
(up to 8 )----------------- (9 to 12)---------------------(more than 12)
t25 x 16 ------------------ t25 x 12 -------------------- t25 x 8
t100 x 16 ---------------- t100 x 12 ------------------- t100 x 8
t500 x 6 ----------------- t500 x 7 --------------------- t500 x 4
------------------------------------------------------------ t1000 x 2
= 38 chips --------------- = 31 chips ------------------- = 22 chips

With fewer than 12 people, the t1000 chips can be used for rebuys or tossed in as a few ego chips for the big stacks near the end of the night.

This is almost the same set Brewster suggested:

T-25 x 200
T-100 x 150
T-500 x 100
T-1000 x 50

That is right on the edge for 15 people with enough to color up to purple (T-500).
T-25 x 12; T-100 x 7; T-500 x 4; T-1000 x 2. Total 25 chips each

200 - 5 (blue)
250 - 25 (green)
250 - 100 (black)
150 - 500 (purple)
100 - 1000 (yellow)
50 - 5000 (white or red)

1000 - total chips

since we mostly use $.25 and $1 and $.05 for the blinds in our regular game and the rest for when we have a tourny or we can use em for higher stakes if we ever do that.. i think that'll be good.. what do you guys think? (what do you think of my color selections too?)

Colors seem okay... the only real difference between your scheme and the "typical" would be that 5s are usually reds, rather than blue.

As for the breakdown... six colors is a lot. I don't think I've ever played in a game where more than 4 were needed, unless you're having a HUGE tournament where you're coloring-up more than three times.

Playing in .10/.20 cash games, and using the denoms as cents, you'll have no need for the 1000($10) or 5000($50) chips. And in tournaments, you'd rarely need them if you're starting with stacks of 1000 and you only have 10-20 players. In which case the 5s would also be kind of pointless, because in a T1000 you'd color them up very quickly.

If you're going to buy a 1000 chip set, you'll definitely be able to handle either a cash or a tourney for up to 25 people easily, and you could probably do it with just four different denoms.

I do like your idea of trying to incorporate them for both cash and tourney though, rather than having two different sets. That way you could handle either really large cash games or tourneys.

So... with all that being said, I haven't really offered any advice yet, have I?

I suppose if you're happy with the .05/.10 cash blinds, you're stuck using denoms in cents, and starting with the 5s.... so how about if you went with something like:
300x5 ($.05) (reds?)
300x25 ($0.25) (greens?)
200x100 ($1.00) (blacks?)
200x500 ($5.00) (purples?)

In your 10-person cash games you could basically just leave out the 500($5) chips, and still have $290 in chips to play with. Figure each person buys in for an average of $20 though the night, and you'll have plenty of chips. Each person will have 20+ .05 chips for the blinds, and the .25 chips will be your workhorses. Re-buys can just get a handful of $1 chips.

In your 10-person tourneys you'll have starting stacks of T2000 for $20, or T1000 for $10, and blinds start at 5/10. Each person gets 20x5, 20x25, and either 4x or 14x 100s.

Seems to work...
