600 chip cash game set

Purchasing 600 (650 really, have 50 no denoms i just can't let go of after seeing the final color setup heh) custom BR Pro's next month for a cash game set. Going to break it down like this:
  • 320x .25c
  • 160x $1
  • 120x $5
Few things, of note. Alot of the planning was done around how i was planning to set up my poker room. I intend to eventually build an 8 man round and then an 8 man oval for a second table (at which time i'll buy more chips to add on for a tourney set). I have no intention of running an underground card room and my personal preference for cash games is 8 players max so that's how many i set the set up for. I'll have exactly enough chips for the maximum amount of players for either a .25/.50 game or a .50/1. I rounded out the 600 with $5 chips that i'll be using mostly for rebuys. I like to play with alot of chips but for rebuys i'd prefer to have people buy off of other players. $5 is large enough that it's not a hassle to break down but small enough so you don't really dwindle down the size of someone's stack (5 stacks of 20 .25c chips are far more intimidating than 5 $5 chips )

For a .25/.50 w/ $20 buy-in, unlimited rebuys (option of re-buying in for $20 or whatever the small stack is if it's over $20) (this is our normal game) the breakdown would be:
  • each player would start with 40 x .25 and 10 x $1
  • leftovers would be 0 .25 chips, 80 $1 chips (unused), and 120 $5 which would be $600 in chips for rebuys (should be more than enough)
For a .50/$1 $40 buy-in, unlimited rebuys (option of re-buying in for $40 or whatever the small stack is if it's over $40) the breakdown would be:
  • each player would start with 20 x .25, 20 x $1, and 3 x $5
  • leftovers would be 160 .25 chips (unused), 0 $1 chips, and 96 $5 chips which would be $480 in chips for rebuys (should be more than enough)
Couldn't think of a more efficient way to break it down, 500 wasn't enough and 750 was too much (i was keeping how i'd store them as a factor as well heh).

Re: 600 chip cash game set

I think you have far too many .25 chips and not near enough $1 chips in this breakdown. From my experience, the .25 chip will only really see action when posting the blinds and the $1 chip will be the workhorse of the group. I'd look at getting a set with a breakdown of:

.25 - 200
1 - 300
5 - 100
= $850 in chips

I would even go with fewer of the .25 chips (160) and add more 5's (140). You could start 8 players with stacks of:
.25 X 16
1 X 16
= $20
or
.25 X 20
1 X 15
= $20

I agree that huge stacks of lower denom chips look fantastic but can become a problem when trying to count out a bet. The game just moves faster when you eliminate some of the clutter from the table.

Re: 600 chip cash game set

Makes perfect sense, I guess i could half the 25c to 160 and just give every player $5 in quarters (20) but one of my biggest pet peeves is having to make any kind of change period in the pot. Right now we're playing with a non denom el-cheapo set with the chips to .25/.50/$1, with this setup we rarely have to make change. With the .50 chip gone though i see us making change far more often if there aren't alot of .25's.

My big thing about making change in the pot is that I obviously pay attention to what people are betting but i very very rarely pay attention to the chips they put in since they're usually right in front of them. When people are making change all the time it's hard to keep track of the pot since the money isn't in front of them, and is instead mixed into the pot. It's not that i think anyone would cheat it's just that with people making change all the time i'd have to worry about it. This is afterall real money we're talking about not tournament chips and mistakes do happen.

I guess i see having to count out more chips as the lesser of 2 evils, besides i think it's more fun imo to play with more chips, i think most of the guys i play with would agree. Does that make sense or am i totally off my gourd? Maybe i'm giving my friends too much credit thinking they can stack four chips and then match that stack for each dollar they want to bet lol.

Re: 600 chip cash game set

I posted this in another thread but I thought it might be useful here.

I have a $20 buy in .25/.50 game every week. I bought enough chips for 20 people. Basically my 8-10 normal people plus 10 rebuys.

.25 - 340 Chips
1.00 - 240 Chips
5.00 - 40 Chips

Of course, you could adjust as you see fit. These breakdowns seem to work great for us. On a .25/.50 game, the minimum raise is obviosuly 1.00 but most raise anywhere from 1.25 to 2.50 depending.

Thought this might help.

Josh

No truer words spoken. Lower denoms just clutter the table later in the game. Rebuys or late comers can buy all $5s and cash them down from the table (or simply buy chips from the larger stacks.) The fewer chips in play, the better the game flows.

Re: 600 chip cash game set

When playing .25/.50 I like to have plenty of chips. I like

20 .25 chips
15 $1 chips

Everything after that should be bigger, so all ones and fives. I would go

200 .25 chips
250 $1 chips
150 $5 chips

That's over $1000 worth of chips so it should be fine for .25/.50 or .50/1
