Re: Chip Breakdown .25/.50 NL cash game

In the past few weeks we have been cutting down on the number of 25˘ chips in play giving everyone 8-12 at the start. When players are eliminated, we use the $5 chips for rebuys. Aside from the slight increase in change making, the game runs much smoother.

Re: Chip Breakdown .25/.50 NL cash game

i was gonna start a new thread to ask this question but i liked all the helpul info i am reading here..

you all refer to a "workhorse chip"

what would be the workhorse for a 10c/25c NL game max bring in-$25
i was thinkin
10x10c
16x25c
20x$1
$5's for rebuys only (buy up to max buy in at $5 increments)

is the workhorse here the quarter or the dollar chip?
would you swap their proportions?

Re: Chip Breakdown .25/.50 NL cash game

For a ten-person .25/.50 cash game, I was planning on starting stacks of:

25c: 8
$1: 13
$5: 1

and a chip buy of

25c: 80
$1: 130
$5: 40

250 total chips, $350 in value. Maybe I'll add some $25's, just in case... or maybe 50 NCV's that can double as any denom in play or be used as $25's...

You could probably get away with just 5 10˘ chips to start with seeing how they will only be used for the small blind (and replaced with a 25˘ chip if the BB is called). The workhorse is still the $1 chip here. I would even start with fewer of the 25˘ chips too.

Re: Chip Breakdown .25/.50 NL cash game

so something like:

5 10c
10 25c
22 $1

?? i am not sure how 2 extra $1 chips would make things that much better..how would you do it..?

Re: Chip Breakdown .25/.50 NL cash game

The secret is not in the two extra $1 chips but in the reduction of the small denom chips (10˘ and 25˘). By reducing the clutter of the smaller chips on the table, it is quicker and easier for players to count out their bets especially if alcohol is involved. It just speeds up the game.

eg. One of our regulars likes to count out his chips one at a time. It is much easier for him (and the rest of us) to count out 3 $1 chips than to sit there watching him count out 12 25˘ chips.

The only drawback is making change when you need to post the blinds (easily done though).
