So let me make sure I understand your question -- you are going to get some denominated chips that you want to use for both cash games and tourneys. And the set you're looking at does not have 25¢ chips. Is that it?
I think denoms are the way to go, myself. So I think you're on the right track, especially if you've already had the experience of using NV chips.
I suggest only 4 (or maybe 5 at most) different chips. Any more than that and I think you are spending more money than you have to, to get some chips that you won't use very often. I'd rather have more chips of a few denoms than too many denoms.
First, what about this:
- drop the $2.50 chip (unless you're going to be playing a lot of $5 Blackjack), and
- drop the $20 chip (unless you are playing a lot of 10/20 or 20/40 poker)
Then, are you going to play primarily tournaments or primarily cash? I think one set can work for both if you are trying to be frugal. You could get away with 4 denoms, as a primary tourney set and some cash:
- $25 chips (or 25¢)
- $100 chips (or $1)
- $500 chips (or $5)
- $1000 chips (or $10)
If you are playing mostly cash, then probably get some $1 and $5 chips and skip the $500s and $1000s.
Here's a very frugal 300 set I use for tourneys up to 10 people (T$5,000 start with 25/50 blinds) and cash games for 6-8 people. If you want to buy more chips, scale up the quantity of each denom and/or add some $1s.
- 80 x $25
- 140 x $100
- 50 x $500
- 30 x $1000
