It's always cool when the $500 chips start showing up, especially when they sre in my stack. It really depends how many starting players you will have, eg if you have 8 players you really don't need $500's. If you have 32 players it is a different story.
I like to use $100, $500, $1000----100 or more of each
Makes it alot easier to count when you need to match that person who goes all in, plus you dont have to worry about getting your stack of 5 dollar chips knocked over if you already have then pre sorted into $100 stacks.
If your playing tourney play, who needs to worry about small denominations, they already bought into the game. I just think its easier, now for cash games, I use $1's and $5's and trust me, theres not alot of chips flaoting around when we play like that.
