Mohegan Sun: Pokerpro

Mohegan Sun

Mohegan Sun is located at:
1 Mohegan Sun Boulevard, Uncasville, CT 06382

About Mohegan Sun:
A world at play and a world to its own, Mohegan Sun, created in 1996 by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, is one of the world's most amazing destinations with some of New England's finest dining, hotel accommodations, retail shopping, live entertainment and sporting events. It is also host to the fabulous Kids Quest/Cyber Quest family entertainment facility, a luxurious day spa, convention center and meeting facility, as well as three major entertainment venues with seating from 300 to 10,000. People from across the globe come to see live concerts with some of today's top headliners, along with major sporting events including Mohegan Sun's very own WNBA's Connecticut Sun.

Every turn leads to a new adventure with an indoor 7-story waterfall, the world's largest and most spectacular planetarium dome and the awe-inspiring Wombi Rock, a glowing crystal mountain made of imported stone that serves as the focal point of the Casino of the Sky.

As a premier destination worldwide, Mohegan Sun includes:

* More than 300,000 square feet of gaming excitement, including smoke-free areas
* A 34-story, 1,200-room luxury hotel tower
* A 20,000 square-foot world-class spa by Elemis
* The Shops at Mohegan Sun, a 130,000 square-foot retail shopping experience
* 30 restaurants, food and beverage outlets
* Three entertainment venues including a 10,000-seat Arena; a 300-seat Cabaret Theatre and 350-seat Wolf Den
* More than 100,000 square feet of meeting and function space, including the Northeast's largest ballroom
* A professionally-managed business center
* 10,000 square-foot indoor pool
* A 17,500 square-foot outdoor sun terrace
* 3-story crystal mountain
* A 55-foot indoor waterfall

Poker at Mohegan Sun:

Mohegan Sun currently has no live poker tables. Instead, they offer electronic PokerPro tables (http://www.playpokerpro.com/). It's like online poker, except you see everyone at the table face to face. Everyone has their own electronic touch screen that shows you your hole cards and has your betting options.

To play on these electronic tables, players must:
1. Obtain a Player's card from one of the casino signup booths
2. Go to the cashier's window near the Seasons Buffet and deposit money on the player's card
3. Go see the brush/pit boss managing the Poker Pro tables

They only have about 8 tables available, however most players go to Foxwoods for poker action. For my most recent trip on July 4, I noted that they were running 3/6 limit, 1/2 NL, and $80 (65 + 15) SnG tournaments.

They offer the following limits:
* Hold'em (Limit and No-Limit), and Omaha (Hi and Hi/Lo Split
* $3/$6, $4/$8, $5/$10 Limit Games
* $1/$2 and $2/$5 No Limit Games

In addition, they have the following SnG limits:
$60 Buy-In
($50.00+$10.00)

$80 Buy-In
($65.00+$15.00)

$100 Buy-In
($85.00+$15.00)

$120 Buy-In
($100.00+$20.00)

$230 Buy-In
($200.00+$30.00)

Payout is %50/30/20 w/ 10 players per table. Players start w/ 3000, blinds go up every 15 minutes (7 minutes for turbo tournaments). Play tends to go reasonably quick since everything is done by computer. Betting probably takes a bit longer than with regular chips, but obviously shuffling/dealing/pot management goes a lot faster. Players have a timer that allows a little more than a minute per decision.

25/50
50/100
100/200
200/400 + 25
etc.

Opponents at my table seemed to understand the mechanics of poker, but made very common "beginner" errors.
1. Limping and calling raises with garbage hands
2. Offering good pot/implied odds with small bets
3. Limping when blinds are high
4. Not folding underpairs to the board

Players also tended to bet the flop w/ top pair, any kicker even if the preflop raiser acts behind them.

Example #1:
Few players limp at 25/50, button makes it 150, most players call.
Flop is K J x. MP leads into the preflop raiser, button smooth-calls, everyone else folds.

Turn J.
MP checks, Button bets 1/2 pot. MP wonders if button has a J, shows K4 and mucks. Button shows KK.

Example #2: blinds 25/50
UTG limps AK, 3 other limpers, tight MP makes it 200 to go, 3 players to the flop.
Ks 7d 2s

UTG leads for 300. 1 fold, MP calls.

turn blank

UTG leads for 600, MP calls

river spade.

UTG checks, MP pushes, UTG calls and wonders why the MP donkey called down with As Js.

I also got to observe this weird hand:
HJ mini raises to 400 at 100/200 blinds. I fold, button calls, SB folds, BB mini-reraises to 600, 2 calls, 3 players to the flop.

Flop 8 8 4

BB leads for 600, HJ calls, button calls.

Turn A

BB checks, HJ thinks and checks, button bets 600
BB calls, HJ pushes all-in, button folds
BB wonders "You have an ace!?" and calls with JJ -- HJ rolls over 86o and stacks him.

=====================================================

I didn't play many hands at the beginning, and picked up a very tight image by the time we got to 50/100.

Did manage a nice little move from the SB:
CO limps in, button folds, I raise from the SB w/ 77, tight BB folds, CO calls.
Flop is T99 and my cbet for 400 takes it down.

However, I got no action from my AK at 100/200 (3xbb raise, no takers) and J8s (BB special) OESFD.

Went out 6th pushing QQ after 1 limper at 200/400+25 (3k stack) and getting called by TT (tight player to my left). She flops the case T (someone folded JT) and I'm out.

Re: Mohegan Sun: Pokerpro

So did you like playing on those things? I've played there a couple of times and really don't like the electronic table. The touchscreen was kinda hard to get used to. I understand the players at the cash tables are just as donkish as at the tourney tables.

I thought the touchscreen was a little funky (i.e. sometimes it was hard to get it to register my clicks), but I thought the positives (horrible opponents, fast action, no dealer mistakes) outweighed the negatives for me.

Sure, the tourny structure seems pretty fast, but I think with the increased hands/hr it's a slightly better deal than a $120 at foxwoods.

Re: Mohegan Sun: Pokerpro

On my recent trip to Italy and Greece I played on a PokerPro table on a Princess Cruise ship. I hated the PokerPro. Awkward interface is an understatement.

I played it in a tourney and unfortunately the mechanix of the tourney were not avalable until it started: blinds start at 25/50 and doubled every 6 minutes with startin stacks of 1500. Every tourney they had was over in about 25 minutes. It was basically a $50 pushfest and not rally what I would call poker.

Re: Mohegan Sun: Pokerpro

yeah even with the bad players, I still don't like it. I could stay home and play on the internet with a better interface.

I'd recommend it for online players who want to get into live casino play. It will be your first lesson in hiding your own physical tells (although, most people don't look for em) and spotting your opponents' tells (people tend not to pay attention to themselves if they're staring at a screen).

That's an excellent point, didn't think about it that way.

If it is a cash game or a more typical long-frame tourney/SNG then this thought has merit.
