Nit = weak, tight (at least that's what I think). I thought I had it because I had folded every hand the last four or five rounds of the table.

Re: WSOP trip report - jldecarlo

Thanks for the explanation Leonard. Did you suspect that the other players at your table were targeting you specifically?

Not in particular. Just that they were reasonably likely to fold to my raise.

Re: WSOP trip report - jldecarlo

I agree. I think that short chips is just a donkey fight for the first two hours
and whoever gets luckiest and wins 100 races to start will be the ones who have a chance. You cant play patient that long with 2500 in chips with blinds that high.

Re: WSOP trip report - jldecarlo

Aren't all of the tournaments stacked with 2x the buyin. ie $1500 buyin is T3000?

thanks for the report

Yes, that's my understanding. They started that last year. But they also changed the structures (eliminated the 1st blind level).

IMO, for the non-professional player, the structure isn't terrible. It's better than most of us can play in our home games or local tournaments. Keep in mind, most of us (if not all) cannot put on or regularly play in a tournament like this, at least not with any more than a small handfull of players. My monthly home game has 45 or more players on average. We start with T2000, 25/25, and 20 min levels and regularly runs 6.5-7 hours.

The $1500 events start with T3000 and 25/50 blinds with 1 hour levels. All the structure sheets are available on the WSOP website. I personally think there is time to sit back and play solid cards and pick your spots carefully (granted, you won't be chip leader this way, but you'll likely still be in the game). But I do agree that you'll need to force the action some at some point. I got down to half a stack within an hour or so and a couple of double-ups over the next couple hours kept me in the game.

The action is fast in these events. The main event its not. We started with 2700 players and were down to about 1200-1300 in 4 hours. Amazing. IMO, the trick is to not get involved in these big pots early without the nuts or darn near it unless you have to. Even when we got to the money the action didn't slow down. We got to the cash (270 places) with about 30 minutes to go in day 1. Day 2 started with 224 players. I went out after 1 hour in day 2 and took 152nd place, so 72 players went out before me, more than 1 per minute.

For most of us, a $1500 event is a "main event". For the pro's, its a donkament. But play does improve if you can get beyond the first 4 hours when over half the field (and most of the donks) is gone.

Re: WSOP trip report - jldecarlo

Strangely enough, I'm playing against an online opponent right now who goes by the name 'the nitty one'.

I think that your definition is on target. Having played with you though, I can't say as it seems like a fitting description of your typical play.
Nit

Also known as Rock.

A nit is a tight-passive player that avoids confrontations. Typically, the term nit is used when this type of passive player plays in a pot-limit or no-limit game. Nits tend to avoid big pots and do not like to gamble.

Thank you, I guess. I was playing like a nit that day, until the hand when I should have, but didn't .
