Mixed-game ring games (home)

I'm curious to know how other people structure home mixed-game ring games. Not dealer's choice games, but HORSE, HOSE, or other similarly structured ring games. Online ring games of HORSE change games after a fixed number of hands (e.g., 10) regardless of the number of people sitting at the table. In B&M casinos, the game changes every 30 minutes, when the dealer changes.

I've played in a couple of home HORSE ring games that were lots of fun. With 5 or 6 people at the table, we started out with two orbits of each game, figuring that more hands in succession of each type would help the less experienced players learn the individual games. After a double orbit for each game, we started playing one orbit each.

What do you do, what works particularly well, and what changes are you considering, if any?

Never done a full horse schedule but we have done things like an orbit of NLHE followed by an orbit of PLO which worked well.

Dad, Do you fix the button somehow (assuming no dedicated dealer) during the stud games so that the blinds are in the correct position when you return to the flop games?

Re: Mixed-game ring games (home)

I prefer starting the night off with 2 laps around the table at each game before shortening to 1 lap. Abby, something told me you would love to hear my opinion.

Nope, since it will be random, I think it is fair for whoever inherits it.

Well, of course I love hearing your opinions, MrCF. Would you still want double laps if the table were full (8 players), or is it just a short-handed preference?

Re: Mixed-game ring games (home)

With a full table with newer players I would prefer only 1 lap due to time. If it's more experienced players I think I would prefer 2 laps/game,

Re: Mixed-game ring games (home)

i do 30 minutes because there was a possibility that the number of players would change throughout the night (thus affecting the number of hands per orbit).

i usually freeze the button during the stud games and advance it for holdem & omaha

Re: Mixed-game ring games (home)

I think one orbit is enough shorthanded, but two orbits let me settle in to each game better. I am not sure what experience level I would put myself at.

Every player gets the button an equal amount of times in the HE and Omaha rounds. The button gets locked during the stud games, then restarts where it would as if the stud games never happened.

If you go with a timed schedule, locking the button is less important since the number of hands might vary per game.
