The main factor influencing my decision was the stakes I wanted to facilitate, primarily $.25/$.50 NL

That's really depends on what limits you host and whether you change it up.

My Cash set has 4 denom's.

I host .25/.50, .50/$1 and $1/$2

I only use 3 denoms during a game.

.25/.50 games- i use the .25 & $1 for initial buy ins, $5 for rebuys
.50/$1 games- same as above (but much less .25's on the table)
$1/$2 games- I use the $1 & $5 for initial buy ins, $20 for rebuys

Nice and simple, keep it that way.

I know everyone likes $20 chips, but Im old fashion and I still like $25 chips. I have 150 $5 chips so there is plenty of $5's so its not a problem for me.

all of the foregoing converted at 1/100 of face. I also use a $0.50 chip at face value.

I originally purchased equal amounts of every denomination to have a 'collectoer's set' of the original Paulson JBs (back when even the Paulson store was selling them as 'surplus movie props'). I added more $5 and $25 over the years to better accommodate actually playing poker with them ($5 buy-in). At that level, the top 3 denominations see virtually no use.

What King said. 4 denoms. .25, 1, and 5 for .25/.50; 1,5, and 20 for 1/2. In fact, I like giving out 5's for rebuys in 1/2 games. I think people do tend to play looser when they have a larger amount of chips in front of them. Also, I have seen players try to hide their larger chips. If you only have whites and reds, or blues and reds, or whatever colors your 1s and 5s are, they have a harder time doing this. Once at the Taj, a young guy with ~400 called an all-in from a guy who looked to have ~150 bucks in front of him. Turns out the guy has a short stack of greens with a few reds on top next to his stack of reds, and actually has about 350. Young kid lost the hand and a few us tried to explain that the other guy didnt have his big chips out front, but the results stood.

I actually have 4 denoms but don't use the highest, it's just there in case the game gets stupidly loose

The 25s will never be used unless I run out of the other chips, the 100s may be used and ND's may have limited use (.05 or .10).
