Chips: 101 | | | If U bet, I will raise This is a problem with some players at the game I host. If someone says "if you bet I am going to raise," should that be binding? |

Otherwise they could be trying to unfairly influence a player.
If it is your turn betting and say raise, the raise stands.
Otherwise you could penalize them for playing out of turn.

While Robert's Rules of Poker for Home Games is not perfect, it is pretty good. In Section 1, under the heading Poker Etiquette:
" The following actions are improper, and grounds for warning, suspending, or barring a violator:
...Making statements or taking action that could unfairly influence the course of play, whether or not the offender is involved in the pot...
If you want to use this rule, announce that you are using Robert's Rules of Poker for home games as your standard set of rules, and have a copy ready when this guy tries to do this again. Warn him the first time (away from the other players if you can), then get harsher. |

As an example, with three players in the hand, and action on player A, player C announces 'if you bet I will raise'. Player A bets, and player B is now unfairly influenced. It could be considered team playing.
But if heads up, then no problem. |

But if heads up, then no problem. | Even heads up I think this is shady and should not be allowed. The opponent is still unfairly influenced by the comment IMO. |

It is worrying though as they seem to have an uncanny knack between of accurately shouting - Raise him he's got nothing/bluffing and oooh Gav must have something or else he wouldn't bet!
Damn there must be a big hole in my home game! |

1. Action is heads up
2. The person making the statement had been asked something by the person with the action. ("You got Aces?" "What are you gonna do if I XXXXX", etc.)
3. The person making the statement has the action, in which case can say just about anything. |

Especially if the player doesn't follow through. At a minimum it is angle shooting. Between the right two players it could be collusion. Most games use Robert's Rules. I would tell my players to read it. I hate crap like this so I would not even give a warning. Penalty on the first offense. If they b!tch, tell them they should have read the rules. Second offense, even if in a game a week or two later, kick them the hell out. Did I mention I hate crap like this?
I see stuff like this more often as I deal. The player turnover rate has been going up lately. It is not my game so I can't eject players. So far a warning has been enough. |

A small friendly sociable game between friends only - like I play in, such trash talking is common place, though we do try to limit it to reduce the influence on play. If your game is open to a wider group though, you need some rules I'd say one to prevent this would be on that list. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
