Playing With Cash

Okay, I know the high-rollers do this a lot with their huge bricks of cash. Yeah it looks cool as hell, but is there a legitimate reason for it? I mean, I thought that's what the chips were for? Where do you draw the line? Why not just play with actual currency. Forgive me if this has been discussed before.

I think I might bust out some rolls of quarters for the next $0.25/$0.50 game I play in....let's see how that goes over.

Re: Playing With Cash

Yeah, it is really funny. I often wonder how people are able to get so much cash at one time.... most ATM's max out at ~600... I wouldn't feel comfortable with more than a couple hundred in my wallet.

I think it's for the "wow" factor. I think that it just takes up too much space and looks tacky.

Re: Playing With Cash

If you watch High Stakes Poker on Game Show Network, there is no poker-related reason for the players to have stacks of cash.

From an appearance standpoint, however, it looks so much cooler if the players have huge stacks of chips and cash in front of them, and that has to be the only reason for it.

Like the OP said, if you're going to have some cash at the table, why not just play with cash period? I agree with that.

The WSOP is guilty of the same thing. They had 25K, 50K, and 100K chips. There was no poker-related need for the 50K chips at all, but it looks so much cooler if the players have huge stacks of chips in multiple colors in front of them, and again that has to be the only reason for it.

Re: Playing With Cash

There are many factors for playing with chips vs cash.

1. chips are easier to handle and count
2. players tend to gamble more with chips than with actual cash
3. legal reasons, no cash allow but chips are fine in some places

Re: Playing With Cash

In the home game it should be chips only.

Certainly for anyone who's a member here.

Well I can say without a doubt that the Bank of America ATM I stopped at last time I was in vegas had so such cap. This was not in a casino but at a branch, drive up ATM. I pulled out $1200 with no problems all in one withdrawl. Not sure about the ATM's in other areas but I do think that the max withdrawl is $600 but thats why they always have 3 ATM's per branch right?

Re: Playing With Cash

Around the local Vancouver area, the max ATM cash withdraw is only $200 each time. You can do multiple withdraws up to the max that is allowed on your account.

Re: Playing With Cash

I'd imagine that if you played big enough at the casinos, you'd probably rebuy with a nice brick of cash and trade it for chips with other players at the table. It would probably take awhile to count down a 10k rebuy at the table, not to mention that the dealer would need to some large denom chips in his/her tray.

I also wonder if there's something sneaky going on in that a casino might need to report large chip,<->cash transactions -- anyone know for sure? (i.e. if you want to under-report your winnings as a pro gambler).

Re: Playing With Cash

In a home game, cash can be on the table if a player buys chips from the big stack (for example) BUT the big stack must leave the cash on the table and it is in play. Cash can be handed in for chips or can stay on the table in play.

Genrerally speaking though, cash is not necessary (unless the host runs out of chips).
