I was listening to NPR yesterday and heard a speaker suggest that the terminally ill don't think in terms of dying. They are living and then they die, but the in between dying is really something that others experience. Not sure how true that is, but I'm wondering now whether animals know they're dying. My dog Rusty is dying and that breaks my heart.

Rusty is the closest I've known to my dear departed Corgi-Shelti mix Katy who passed on New Years eve 2005. Just as I was becoming enthralled with all things poker and chipping I lost her to kidney disease. It was a short illness so she was only 'dying' for six weeks or so. Up to then she was full of life even at the fairly ripe old age of 14. I tried desperately to save her even setting up a contraption to administer fluids to her intravenously at home. It was to no avail and she succombed pretty quickly to the disease. My vet told my she was suffering a great deal and that the best thing to do was to put her out of her misery. It was an incredibly hard thing to do.

Rusty's illness is bringing all that back for me, including my relative lack of interest in doing anything away from home like parties and poker games. I stayed in last night while friends went out to dinners and parties to celebrate the new year. I am also not interested in two different home games being held this weekend. I'm afraid that I'll miss something. EIther something wonderful that he does or that something bad will happen to him.

He fell down in my kitchen yesterday morning and that was really hard to witness. He's a really strong big guy in spite of being a tri-pawd and stricken with this horrible cancer. He seemed to exhibit fear when he fell, at least that's what I thought I saw in his eyes. It's icey here so now when we go outside even in the yard I'm putting him on his lead and walking closely with him. I hope it helps to make him more comfortable and secure.

There are surely a lot of fun things in life and there are definitely lots of others that aren't so much fun. This is one of those. I hope that the dying part is something that he's unaware of.

Ugh, winter has finally arrived here in the great white north! Temperature as I'm typing is -38 celcius, with the windchill we're looking at -53 celcius (-36.4F/-63.4F for you Americans)! We had a very slow start to the winter, with nice conditions until this week. The beautiful summer days spent on the golf course seem like a very distant memory right now:(

Have not been buying many poker chips lately, and successfully sold a bunch of extras that I wasn't using. It's not fun seeing chips go, but the cash that came in was welcome after a very busy couple of months of buying. There has been so much chip turnover in the last year for me, but I'm actually starting to find a little contentment for what I have. I keep telling myself that I should sell one of my sets, but I just can't part with any of them it seems. I've been really lucky to own some great chips, and my current lineup is almost perfect!

Online poker faded into the background during the summer months, and lately I've been putting in a little more time at the virtual felt. Still not really getting any volume, and I hope to get some more hands in the coming months. Seems like it's hard to get back into a schedule of playing after not playing much in a few months. I have been enjoying it more lately, so that's a good sign.

After being a renter ever since leaving home, I am close to buying a new house! It could be finalized before Christmas (which would be awesome), but that might be cutting it a little fine. Odds are I will be moving in at the end of the month if all goes as planned. I'm very excited about finally owning my own home, after being involved in the construction of so many in the last 7.5 years. It's not a dream home, but a nice 1204 sqft house. I'm actually going to finally have room for my poker table, and hope to be hosting a few two table tourney's this winter.

Anyway, not sure if anyone actually reads these blogs, but if you made it this far, thanks for reading. Also, Merry Christmas!:)

As a stay at home poker lover who supports the career of his Navy wife, and watches over two cute little girls, you can guess my bankroll isn't that big. So I don't really have a whole lot of great poker stories to tell. I try and play some small ball stuff on FT when I can get the time.

My days are filled with chasing after a 3 and 5 yr old. Then heading off to some sporting event somewhere to get yelled at while wearing the most unflattering outfit (vertical stripes...)-phhhhewwwww... I then come home to my wonderful wife who has spent the day serving our country.

Now that I have discovered this I will start to share some of my (mis)adventures on the felt, the field and at home.

Take care for now,

Hi gang.
Has it ever been a strange year so far. Mostly work, work, work..leaving very little time for much else. I hadn't been all that active here on CT, mostly lurking and posting from time to time. Then things changed for me.

As most of you know, I've been seperated since early July and thought I was headed for a divorce (until recently). Although we're still seperated and living apart, my wife and I continue to try and change our relationship for the better so we'll see where the future leads us! At the same time, with the holidays upon us, I'd hoped for the chance of a somewhat normal Thanksgiving/Christmas. Then I realized that not just me, but others here on CT as well have had to endure some of what I've been through. I'm both thankfull & gratefull that everyone seems to be pulling through their own perspective problems with their heads held high and are looking to the future also.

And certainly last (although not least), I've seen my evolution with collecting chipsets begin. It started with a small custom ceramic set that I had made back in January I believe. Then just recently, and thanks to UW85, I was able to purchase a set of hotstamped T-molds! Even sooner, I'll be purchasing a set of the Riverboats (2nd's) from unvmyset..thanks to you as well! It's safe to say that the "bug" has finally bitten me as I look to having my collection grow even more over the next year!

Cheers to everyone here at CT! Thanks for all your inspirations and advice along the way ;)

Like probably all of you (as members of this forum) I read a lot of poker books. I read a lot of stuff online, too. I am forever grateful to the likes of Sklansky, Harrington, Gordon, and Miller for some great material to work with. Online has advantages, too. If you have a specific question you can get someone to give you feedback tailored to your specific situation. Of course, not all advice is worthwhile.

So, I've gut this idea bubbling up in my head. I'm considering trying to put together an online resource which will function much like a poker book in some regards, but with important enhancements. In addition to having a thriving Strategy area for questions and answers I also envision some active content to allow someone to get precise answers to many questions (Pot Odds, 10/5 rule calculations, and the like). I'm trying to figure out if it's actually possible to provide a large enough assortment of tools for anyone to use where they wouldn't have to rely on as much subjective advice. I'd like to think that much of the underlying probabilities built into poker games could be captured and thereby used as a means of providing solid, reliable MATHS to back up a given strategy.

Of course, math isn't everything. I know that. I am trying to help bridge the gap for those who care to learn what the math actually says rather than just using rules of thumb.

Any thoughts? Shoot me some comments.

Back in my nascent days as a poker player (circa 2004), well as a serious student of the game at least, I created my first online poker account on Empire Poker. It was a skin of Party Poker that catered to the US market. The day I signed up to play I also decided to blog about my experiences on my newly created weblog entitled Poker Roadtrip (It's dead now. Googling around will not produce the old content but will link you to the brinkster account I used or to my new domain name).

I dutifully played a session online more or less every day and then I would muse about it in a blog post. I know that probably sounds deadly boring to you reading this now unless you were part of "the scene" at the time (there were a lot of these blogs around at the time).

I was a young father then (my firstborn joined the family in October of 2003). Online poker was an answer to prayer of sorts for me. With a young baby at home I suddenly found myself housebound most evenings helping my wife take care of our son. Having an infant involves a lot of sleep interruption, changing diapers, feedings, and the like. I found online poker to be very compatible with my new lifestyle. If I had thirty minutes or an hour here and there, I could fill the time with a few orbits. When my wife needed extra sleep, I would often sit in my office with my son asleep in my arms as I clicked away at the limit tables.

I read a lot about poker in those days, too. I was (and still am) a member of 2+2's poker forums. I spent a lot of time reading about home poker and poker theory. I was there the day that Ten introduced the Pharoahs chips to 2+2 and followed him over to his newly created site, ChipTalk.net. I bought a little over a thousand of those fantastic chips in the original group buy and used them in my home game from that point until I had my own custom ceramic and clay chips made. I sold them more or less at cost to pay for my new sets. Along the way I became friends with Ten and Jojo and was invited to become one of the sites founding moderators - a title I humbly accepted and proudly honor to this day.

Fast forward many years as my family expanded (we have two children now) and lifestyles inevitably change. Since I was busy with my moderating duties here my blogging fell off and eventually I terminated it. I attended the 1st and 2nd ChipTalk meetups in Chicago and Atlanta, respectively. I came to know many of our members on a personal level. I was/am a member of the Chiptalk team "The Hammers", which was created to participate in the original team play concept on PokerRoom.com. We still make reference to our team and the other teams that formed on occasion. This was my personal poker zenith.

Life presents everyone with unique opportunities and challenges. My most profound challenge to date happened in March 2007. I had joined a startup company (Appforge, Inc) as a developer of mobile applications in their professional services division. The main reason to become part of a startup company is to work as hard as possible to help that company succeed and reap the benefits of a financial windfall. Well, we got close but ultimately we failed to cross the finish line and Appforge and the company ceased operation literally overnight. I suddenly found myself out of work with a wife and two children. To say this had a profound effect on me is a huge understatement. The Atlanta meetup happened a few weeks after my becoming unemployed and my wife insisted on my sticking with my plans to attend. I had a great time with my fellow CTers but I'm sure they would all tell you that I was far from my regular self.

I was able to find a new job with one of my company's clients after being out of work for ten weeks. I moved the family to Raleigh, NC and still work for my new employer, Thomson Reuters, as a mobile software developer. About a year after moving I found myself involved in an IRS dispute. I was floored when I discovered that they were going to be trying to recover tens of thousands of dollars from my in back taxes and fines. Having already endured a huge financial hit from being out of work and then relocating to a new city, I found myself in a very tenuous financial situation. I decided at that time that I needed to walk away from poker and the lifestyle to concentrate on taking care of my financial problems.

After almost a year of back and forth, my IRS issue was resolved. In the end it was determined that I only owed the government a couple hundred dollars. I had already sent them over ten grand during the investigation so you can imagine how much of a relief it was to not only be free from it, but also to receive most of my money back. My family's financial situation was no longer tenuous and over time I have been able to gradually reacquaint myself with poker and participating on the forums again.

For those of you who came on the scene during my blackout period, let me say, "Hi. I'm VARoadstter. Damn glad to meet you". For those of you whom I've known for some time, let me say, "It's good to be home again".

I was a serious fanboy of the TT and posted about it on a fansite frequently. Members of the site often created usernames that payed homage to their cars so I wanted to do likewise. "Roadstter" is a mashup of TT and Roadster. Obviously, that name was not available so I needed to invent one. Being a resident of Virginia at the time, I chose to prepend VA to the front of the name and viola! VARoadstter the entity was born.

This is the last full day of my week at the Lake James cottage. The rental lady informed us that we could stay an extra day for free as the renters who were supposed to take over the cottage today never sent the balance due for their rental. Guess the economy is taking it's toll on vacation spending. I'm told this particular cottage has been vacant about 1/2 the summer and it's typically rented 100% of the time and well in advance. Oh well, good for us as this turned into an 8-day week.

Finally got some poker play in too, albeit head-up and dealer's choice with lots of crazy games like 1968 lowest diamond in the hole (7 card stud with 6s and 8s both while and lowest diamond in the hole takes 1/2 the pot). Fun even so though.

I've been coming here to Lake James and Pokagon State Park in N.E. Indiana for at least 12 years now. Started with tent camping at the park and then began staying in the Potawatomi Inn and then graduated to renting cabins at the Inn. Six years ago I started bringing the pups here and for that needed to rent a private cottage. This is my fourth year at this particular cottage and I sure wish the owners were inclined to sell. Especially in this down economy. So many places are for sale here and at prices way more reasonable than in the past. Alas, none of them are as nice as the cottage that I'm sitting at now and typing this from. It's just an outstanding place. Five bedrooms, two baths, huge backyard with a small beach and boat dock. It's just a dream if you've got pups and a boat. Absolutely terrific.

This year has been eventful though as one of the more eccentric cottage neighbors has a pet lamb and an 8-month old golden retriever puppy. Didn't even realize the dog was a golden at first she's so dirty she looked like a black lab. Crazy dog too and seems to always get loose. She steels stuff from clothes lines, the patio and the yard so I can't leave any of the dog toys out at all. She's funny though and loves jumping off the pier and swimming. Last night though the lamb and pup showed up at the kitchen door and tried to get in the house here. That of course made my dogs nutzo and we were just leaving for a boat ride. I got the lamb to go home and got the dogs in the boat and turned around to see the lamb on the pier like she was going for a ride with us. Too funny. I think these two animals need some serious attention.

The pups are in love with the sand bar this year and I've been spending lots of quality time there with them. The new boat has a nice swim platform and I bought them a Paws Aboard ladder and a nice raft too so they have a much easier time getting on/off the boat. It's been great.

More fun planned for today. A final bike ride on the trails at Pokagon, last day at the sand bar, twilight boat ride, dinner out and then packing up to head back to Chi-town. Fun day and gonna be sad to leave tomorrow.

Am sitting on the back deck of a nice little cottage that I'm renting for the 4th year running overlooking beautiful Lake James in N.E. Indiana. Across the 1st basin I see the Potawatomi Inn through the haze that has been the norm today. When it hasn't rained it's been overcast and hazy with the sun making very few appearances. It's too cool for boating or swimming so am 'borrowing' a neighbor's wireless connection and checking in with ChipTalk as well as the down stock market on my laptop.

Nice to see that Smitty is working on a custom set of BCCs. Makes me wish that I had a design in the works to take advantage of the 11th hour purchasing timeframe.

Really happy to hear the positive news about Links' sister-in-law and her health concerns. Brings home the fact that family, loved ones, good health and happiness are what's really important in life.

Very excited about the possibility of a SCS3 and glad that Jayson is considering organizing . I know it will be a fab affair if he does. Pretty sure I can talk geewhiz into attending if this one comes to pass.

Just read about Matty's Omaha bad beat and can only come up with 'that's poker' in response. I guess more precisely 'that's Omaha' since the opponent was holding trip 6s and little else when the money went in.

Alas, I'm bored. I brought the travel set of Super Diamonds and Copags, but there's only one other human at the cottage with me right now and they're not interested in playing. As smart as the Goldens are, they've not yet mastered card games.

The Perseid meteor shower is supposed to be making it's annual appearance tonight so am hopeful the clouds will clear so as to make them dazzling. This is my first time here at the lake property for the Perseids and they're supposed to be very visible here when the moon isn't big and bright, which it won't be tonight. Stars are plentiful here too, which I find unusual being from Chicago where we rarely see them.

Cheers CTers.

After almost 4.5 years here on CT, I think I'm finally 100% happy with my collection of playable sets. I feel more relieved than anything else and can finally stop scouring here and feebay for the next best thing. The official line up is one cash set (custom H-molds for stakes spanning 25c/50c to 2/5NL) and 3 tourney sets (a 30 person custom T-mold solid set, an aztar striped tourney set for 15 players and a TOC set of oversized winner club set for 10). Thanks to all that help me get here! :)

I know this has been a much smaller group buy than the original 2009ASMFDLGCRHS was .. but all in all, it hasn't been too bad.

In a matter of about 2 weeks, we have semi-ressurected a previously unsuccessful GB by successfully designed an inlay, selecting specific colors, and meeting the minimum order requirement.

With only a few days left to stop taking orders, I think it has gone relatively smooth and painless. Lets hope a few more orders come in.

(Of course, once they come in, and I have to ship them .. I have a hunch it will be a different story).

Until then, keep on keeping on.

Best moment of the night: my brother flops a set and is rivered by a flush in like a $15 pot. He has to the leave the room b/c he's so steamed LOLZ. I mean, we're talking about a 40 year old man and a $15 pot. It was enjoyable to me.

I finished down 5 big bets, which is fine considering that I ran like booty and was partaking in various substances that tend to impair play. Unfortunately my other brother won, and I had to hear about it. He doesn't play particularly well, but, um...yeah he thinks he's the nutz.

Playing the CT tournament now. Nothing too much happening. Got 3bet by vrecksler, but he always shows so it doesn't hurt. 1700 after 45 minutes, just waiting for push/fold because i'm a shovebot donk.

My Weekend
Wow what a great weekend. Went to the NC Crystal Coast beaches from Thursday evening to Saturday evening and it was great. The ocean was calm and the weather was perfect.

Somehow I stumbled on a poker game at this condo complex we were staying at. Seven guys including me playing .25-.50 NLHE around one of those cheapish octagonal folding toppers. Ended up playing for about 5 hours one night and turning my $20 into $85 or so. These guys were bad but everyone was having fun and drinking. One hand went raise to $2, I reraise with KK to $6, a third player calls, a fourth player calls, and the first player goes allin for about $10. I went allin having everybody covered and just one of the two callers went all in. The hands? Q9 and 33:lol:

Playing with dice chips has me excited about the custom ASM set I have coming. I am very pleased with the design and now I just have to wait which is, as you guys know, the hardest part of the process (well, maybe paying for them is harder).

The WSOP
Turnout has been quite low for the first two days of the main event, about 1100 and 850 for day 1a and 1b, respectively. This is bad news for the WSOP, because the main event is the crowning jewel of not only their event, but of the entire poker season. If prize pools and entry figures get smaller I think the popularity of poker will slowly drop, or at least stagnate. It would help if the government would get out of the way.

The sharp drop in numbers at the 50K HORSE was understandable since a 40K NLHE was added early in the series, fewer fish were there because of the lack of television coverage, and fewer pros straddling the fence actually jumped over because they saw that the field was so stacked. I have read the arguments for both sides, one arguing for changing the final table to NLHE and the other arguing to keep it HORSE or even expand it to the 8-game format used in the $10K world championship mixed event. What it boils down to is this: is keeping the game "pure" and doing what the players want to do better for the game than the TV exposure garnered from a final table of several known pros playing NLHE? I remember seeing Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Andy Bloch, David Singer, Jim Bechtel (former ME winner), Dewey Tomko, Patrik Antonius, and TJ CLoutier at a final table and thinking WOW! I think that was the greatest final table ever, at least in stature, and I think that the 50K HORSE should try to replicate what they had that year and focus on TV ratings. If that means playing NLHE only at the final table, then so be it. But I think advancing the game is more important than catering to the players, even though they provide the prize pool. Maybe if enough people watch, it will someday be provided for them.

The Chiptalk WSOP fantasy league has been a lot of fun for me. There are four teams, jojo's, josh's, philthethrill's, and mine, that have done well and are still alive, though it will take multiple cashes and at least one really deep run for me or phil to get in the top 2. I think jojo and I had the best-picked, most-balanced teams. Four of my guys had several cashes and all made final tables, and my two other guys both had single top 20 finishes. Jojo had Ivey crush early on but his other players (Ike Baron, BoostedJ Justin Smith) were steady throughout. I give Josh credit though, he picked Lisandro and Lisandro hit the ball out of the freakin park three times.

Steve McNair
The death of Steve McNair was quite a shock. He had only been out of the league for a year and I will always think of him as one of the most gifted quarterbacks I saw play. There is no telling how much more success he would have had if he had not been plagued by injuries. Nevertheless, he was still out there week after week, and usually played well. Not many guys that big can move that well AND pass accurately and with consistency. McNair could. His most famous play will always be the last play of the Super Bowl against the Rams, but the play before, where he scrambled for what seemed like a minute, fighting off tacklers and nearly being knocked to the turf, only to prop himself up and regain his footing before throwing downfield for a completion inside the ten yard line.
