There's all kinds of things I like to see on poker chips, but I'm not sure this theme is one of them. Perhaps it's because this particular medium is reserved for what most would consider entertainment purposes.
Nope don't like the idea. I am not American but even if I was, I don't like the commercializing of a tragedy.
I wasn't sure why I didn't like it, but I think you've summed it up nicely. It's one thing to commemorate the loss, but how about all the proceeds going to a 9-11 charity. It should be illegal to make money off of something like that.
I think there's been a resurgence of things like this. The worst that I heard of was a lighter that looked like a world trade center building and when you sparked the flame there was a plane shape that would glow in the shaft of the lighter at the relative height where the first plane struck.
I agree completely with the 'don't make money off of a tragedy' but many of the nations that produce these may not be aware of how people feel. One thing is clear, though, if these types of goods are purchased they'll keep making more. I think the 'commemorative' and 'respectful' things are just as bad as the cheap horrible ones.
I'm glad to see that there are others here who feel the same way about this as I do.
I'm opposed to the whole "bandwagon patriot" idea that has consumed this country since September 2001. There is almost a sense that if you don't allow someone else to make money from you in support of their latest red-white-and-blue product, then you're the terrorist.
If you want to fly flags in your yard or put magnetic ribbons on your car, that's great. But you cross the line (IMO) when you start thinking "hey, I could make some money if I mass-produce and sell this thing". Sellers like this pander to post-9/11 paranoids in fear of feeling anything less than 100% American.
Besides, in this particular case, the artwork is lame and amateurish (Pentagon surround entirely by grass and sky?, airplane on approach or landing? [the gear is down], bald eagle that appears to be wearing a Team USA hockey mask?). This would actually be a good chip at the weekly Al-Qaida game.
I hate patriotism as a trend. As an active-duty member of the U.S. Navy since way before 9/11, I can tell you it sickens me that our citizens needed something like the destruction of the World Trade Center Towers to "inspire" patriotism. It sickens me more that, even after something of this magnitude, the trend only lasted about six months and then they were back to their same old self-serving, self-centered B.S.. I love my country, but I weep for her.
