I'm selling a popular stock ceramic set of chips on ebay today since the listing fees are only $0.20 today.
With so many people just looking for more of a certain color, I was going to sell them in stacks of each color. You think they'd sell better this way than selling them as a playable set?
Especially because people likely don't agree on what a playable set is because everyone plays different structures?
I could offer combined shipping for those who actually were tyring to put a set together, though.
I think breaking up the denoms would work better, as long as you offer combined shipping for people who buy multiple lots, and mention that you have other denoms/chips for sale in your listing.
The more chips are in an auction, the less per chip people expect to pay. Usually a price break comes at higher quantities, so you may make a few more bucks by splitting them up. Also, if certain people only want certain denoms, then they're free to add to their set instead of buying a pre-determined amount.
Depending on how many you have, I'd recommend selling them by the rack. The lowest I'd put in a lot are 50 chips. When there's that few, the shipping takes away from the price you're paying on the chips.
I second Brett's opinion on the quantity and mailing cost. It costs the same to mail 50 chips as it does 20 or 30 chips depending on the packing and service used. On the set issue I think a little different. Yes, people do expect lower cost in larger quantities but if you are looking for a set and you have to bid on a bunch of auctions to get it, I think you loose some bidders. imho it is a pain to keep track of bidding and particularly last second snipping on more than one auction. Belive me I have tried bidding on two auctions that end simultaneaoushly and ussually I either loose one or both auctions. Now you could get the auctions to end 10 minutes apart but I always worry, what if I get the first but not the second. However, if this is a currently available set and you can add to it, then my point about the multiple listing is moot. In general I break the set if I am looking to get more money and think I can sell all denoms. If I am concerned that some denoms will not sell, I keep the set together and get a little less money. Nothing worst than being stuck with 50 or 100 chips that don't go with anything you have and no one wants. Good luck!
