Mods - can we make this thread a sticky in this forum?
Thanks,
jamby
By the way - the opening post has been updated with IDs noted to date - alphabetized of course. Keep 'em coming. Quote: |

I went to the Ebay site in an attempt to find out if this type of "collusion" violates any Ebay policy. I could find no such prohibition. Every state has laws concerning auctions and and there certainly are laws prohibiting prohibiting the seller (or his proxies) from bidding in order to drive up the auction price. See for below for Maine law: (4) If the auctioneer knowingly receives a bid on the seller's behalf or the seller makes or procures such a bid, and notice has not been given that liberty for such bidding is reserved, the buyer may at his option avoid the sale or take the goods at the price of the last good faith bid prior to the completion of the sale. This subsection shall not apply to any bid at a forced sale. 11 M.R.S.A. § 2-328

But to my knowledge there is no prohibition against potential buyers "colluding" in the manner described. The comment refers to "house rules" and that could be a different matter. Such a rule may exist, but I could not find it. I purchased on Ebay this week a bunch of $.50 Crystal Park chips and easily saw that a particular bidder and I were driving up the price. I considered contacting the bidder, but did not, about refraining from bidding in certain auctions if he did the same in others. I have witnesses this type of "collusion" in auctions that I have personally attended.
For the record, my ebay name is the same as that posted here. |

Chips: 14,006 | | | Re: eBay/Chiptalk ID cross-reference listing I wasn't saying that it was collusion, just to clarify. I just went to ebay and searched all around for anything about bid collusion as well and there was nothing to be found, so in that case I'd have no problem colluding with anyone who wants to get a good deal for something on ebay! Chips: 3,424 | | | Re: eBay/Chiptalk ID cross-reference listing I hear the spirit of what you are saying, but I still stand behind the thought process of "the highest bidder win, regardless of which other web sites, forums, or groups he / she belongs to" Just because I know someone in an online forum, doesn't mean I'm not going to try and outbid you to win an item I'm interested in. That would be the same as soft playing into a friend, or checking it down with your buddy when there in an (unknown) all in between you. Bid an auction, just as you would play your hand.
If someone outbids another member of this forum, or just some other cat that happened to have a bid on an auction, that person is simply willing to pay more for a product that the next guy. That is not collusion.
Starting a thread, and getting everyone to agree that they won't bid against one another, is.
To each is own in thier auction bidding.
May the highest bidder win. |

Chips: 1,075 | | | Re: eBay/Chiptalk ID cross-reference listing Excellent points that you make here, Quads. I don't think we're trying to agree not bid against one another in this thread or anything of the sort - at least collectively. Although some members might elect to do so and that is there right. My goad in this thread is simply to share information. We can then do with that information as we choose.
Cheers,
