Thoughts on custom progression

what do people think about:

- Using a NCV chip as a $0.05 chip
- Using the T25 as the $0.25 chip
- Using another NCV chip as a $1 chip?

Basically, here would be what I purchase:

T25
T100
T500
T1000
T5000
NCV (non denominated inlay)
NCV (non denominated inlay)

Trying to find a way around the "divide by 100" deal without committing more chips to a specific denom ($0.05 & $1). This way I can use them for other things than just $0.05 & $1, but I'm not sure if it would be funny with NCV/25/NCV.

Should I just do a non-denominated inlay for all???

T500 as the $5.00
T1000 as the $10.00

No $25 chip but if a big cash game the T5000 can be $50.00 and you have the typical 5x progression.

Sounds like you already have a committed chip in my eyes.

Using tournament sets as cash sets just doesn't work for me. Dividing by 100 just seems wrong. Cash sets should be denominated that way and tournament sets should be just that. If you're going to mix the two I think you're better off getting non-denominated chips and assigning the denomination to suite the game you're playing.

While I bought a specific cash set (the Arizona Club), the first set was the Lounge set. It has values on the chips, but no denominations. The original plan was that I could use the T25 for quarters, the T1 for dollars, the T5 for either $5 or 5 cents depending on stakes.

If you are looking to get a super flexible set, go with values and no denoms. It works out great and helps stretch the chips buying buck a little.


Now, of course, this being Chiptalk and all, you won't be able to resist the desire to buy more chips. That will give you an excuse for a second set that may be cash only.

Either way, your call. I like what I did to begin with. We still wind up using the "tournament" set more than the cash set, regardless of the cash or tourney nature of the game.

Basically, I was thinking that the Pink NCV would be pretty much designated as the $0.05 for our micro stakes games and could be used as a $5 for higher games. Eventually it could be used as a higher tourney denom for high roller tourney's!

The blue NCV chip I would use as an alternate T5000 chip or possibly a T10,000 or T25,000.

I'm just hesitant to get a printed $0.25 chip because I have to purchase so many. I know that the $0.05 can be a NCV so it doesn't have to have "$0.05" printed on the inlay and can be more flexible, but it's the massive amount of extra $0.25 chips that I'm trying to avoid having to purchase.

Hi - new to this site, but have been thinking about the same issue for when/if I get my custom set. So will chuck in my 2c...

First of all, I actually like having a combined cash/tourney set - it feels much better to raise someone by $1000, even if it is $1 in reality. And I have issues about using NCVs - people have to remember what it's actually worth.

So have been thinking of getting:

T25
T50
T100
T500
T1000
T5000

My rationale is as follows:
I can use the set for 5c/10c games (T50 = 5c, T100 = 10c, T500 = 50c, etc), 10c/20c games (just use T100 = 10c onwards) or 25c/50c games (T25 = 25c, T50 = 50c, T100 = $1, etc) And I subscribe to the theory that denoms should be closer together for a cash game, so T25/T50/T100 isn't necessarily a bad thing (close together, like real currency denoms).

The denoms are also suitable for a tourney structure. Instead of getting tons of T25s which you only use in the early stages of a tournament, you only need a relatively small number of T25s and T50s. Eg. when the blinds are $75/150, you need 5 x T25s, but with a T50 chip you only need 1xT25 and 2xT50 (3 chips instead of 5, a 40% saving).

I'd get 60 T25 and 60 T50 instead of 180 T25, for example.

Doing it this way, you save yourself one (NCV) denom. And because the T25 and T50s are close to the next highest denom, you don't need many of them for either a cash or tourney game.

Anyway, thought I'd put it out there.
