i'm nearly done. my thoughts, in a nutshell:
the writing is fairly bad. gus, like any poker player, is no writer. but in this case i think maybe he got hellmuth's editor. mucho use of exclamation points, and some non-standard awkward english.
that said, it's a very interesting, practice-based explication of the tournament as it unfolds. i think n00bs will get tons out of it (although i'm certain they'll tend to misapply much that they learn), and experienced players will too. i learned gus played some extraordinarily soft opponents in melbourne, for instance.
but seriously, i think it's a relatively straightforward description of a laggy player at work, but i also guess his flop aggression as the preflop caller (especially from the blinds/oop) is new and interesting to me.
i've just finished the chapter leading up to the final table, and i really look forward to seeing his account of the shorthnaded play. more than a quarter of the book is devoted to 3 handed down to the win.
tangentially, i also look forward to seeing gobboboy's response at 2+2.
