I could if it was a cash game the guy could leave his cards face down, but in a tournament the cards need to be put up on the table.
I thought of this situation where the reverse happens but the principle is still the same I think. Sometimes, on the WPT when a player makes an ALL-IN call and is excited to see he is ahead and he flops his hand (with force) into the middle of the table?? Technically that players hand could be mucked if it was a throwing motion towards the muck, but should it really be mucked?? No. He is showing emotion. I think the same thing is happening here. The guy was disgusted to be so far behind and just dropped his cards in front of him.
