I modeled my .25/.50 cash set starting stacks similar to what you'd get in a casino 1/2 NL game (as jldecarlo mentioned above).

We do a $40 buy in and I'll dish out 40x$1 chips to everyone, and I'll give myself a few ones and a bunch of quarters to make change for everyone. The total number of quarters on the table is usually about 12 per player (although 8 per player is sufficient).

My cash set was designed for 8 people and consists of:

100x.25
300x1.00
100x5.00
