I try to start people off with 30-40 chips. For a .25-.50 nl game, this means 20x.25 and 20x$1, for $1-$2 nl game 20x$1 and 16x$5. Anything more than that ($25 in the small game and $100 in the big game) and I use $5 and $25 chips respectively. So to start, I like 200 quarters, 200 dollars, and 160 fives at least. Throw in some 25's or 20's and you should be set for a full sized cash game.
