I agree that Faux Clays are the best alternative despite not having a recessed area for the label. Numerous members have used very thin (2 mil) labels on their Faux Clays and have had good results. They could run you up to $0.30/chip for extinct colors, but you can find some extinct colors for $0.10/chip or so.
