I call this hand. I would not have checked the river, but defense bet it. It looks too much like an internet bluff to me. He thinks you have a small pair and is trying to steal. If you defense bet like $4 you can tell if you have it or not with the action he gives. But I agree with the others, play more aggressively before this point in the action.
